Joss Whedon to Direct The Avengers Source: Deadline New York April 13, 2010

Deadline New York reports that Marvel Studios is moving ahead with Joss Whedon as director of The Avengers. The site says he is now in final negotiations to helm the action adventure scheduled for a May 4, 2012 release.

The film would feature many of the lead actors involved in Marvel Studios adaptations right now, including Robert Downey Jr. ("Iron Man" films), Chris Evans (Captain America), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury) and more.

Paramount Pictures will distribute the film.

Whedon's credits include "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Firefly," "Angel," Serenity, "Dollhouse" and upcoming The Cabin in the Woods

Popularity with fans.....

High.

Number of feature movies Whedon has directed.....

One.
Serenity.

Number of box office successes directing feature films.....

Zero.
Serenity didn't perform beyond its fan base and broke even if not lost money.

I'm a Wait and See on this one. Like the Cap movie, I'll reserve judgement until after I've seen the film. I'm just worried that they've given the reins to a fan favorite that has yet to spill out with success in the mainstream (which, major motion pictures have to do to be profitable. See Watchmen).

Then again, the way Marvel is rumored to be lowballing salaries, maybe one has to be a fan of the work to take the project?

Yes this is a wait & see for me as well.
There are only (3) things that he's done that I really liked.
So I am not sure if he can pull of something HUGE like an all star cast Avengers movie.

For the record though, I'm a huge Firefly & Serenity fan. I loved the TV show, and loved the movie.

I also read "Astonishing X-Men" when Joss Whedon was writing that comic book. I thought he did an excellent job on it as well.

I can't comment on any of the Buffy the Vampire stuff, as I've never cared to watch any of it.

Grrr....I'm going to be upset if they drop the Hulk from the Avengers film.  I mean I can sort of understand, but it just seems kind of pointless to assemble them without a real threat like the Hulk to bring them together.

Isn't he the one who gave Storm that line in the first Xmen, "Do you know what happens when a lightning hits a frog?" (Something like that), "Like everyone else."

We should bug Whedon on this.

Matches I know what you mean. I would love to see Giant Man and the Wasp especially for the scene where Giant Man would pull Cap into the Avengers sub. I'm afraid from the description I've read they're going with the Ultimates version where Fury has the search for Cap and basically has the Avengers under his thumb to retrieve Cap from the frozen wastelands. I think this concept takes away from the Original Avengers as to me they seem to be his personal heroes rather than this team that forged themselves for the good of all.

Well, see, I'm o.k. with Fury being a part of the Avengers origin, I just don't see what kind of a threat they are going to face.

I mean I guess you could do a whole Masters of Evil thing perhaps even tieing them to a villain we see in Cap Movie, but with the Avengers and the Hulk, I think having a threat like the Hulk really works well with the story, you also don't need yet another origin since his origin was already presented.

I figured they could work Hank Pym and the Wasp in relativly easily within the Avengers film (or possibly in cameo in the Ironman film, or possibly Thor).  But the villain should be something established from the previous films, and unless they will be fightin Loki or the Red Skull directly, I think the Hulk just works best.

But we'll have to see.  Maybe they are holding off on the hulk as he's mostly CGI so they are debating if they really need Ed Norton or not at this time.

Hoo boy. I don`t know about this one. Im not much on Whedon, but maybe he can do it. Does this mean the Avengers are gonna break into song and dance like his internet show?

Hopefully for the ending of the Cap movie they'll use Zemo who could be carried over for the Avengers film as well. Zemo could form a Masters of evil with Whiplash, Red Skull ?, Loki and throw in a couple of new villians.

Whatever happens I just hope its done well and ties in good with the other Marvel films and does justice to the originals. Ive noticed in the previews that black widow is in the marvel u outfit instead of her ultimates gear,so maybe thats a sign? Who knows.
