Let me start off by saying I AM NOT one of those fanboys that throws a fit everytime something doesn't look or sound right in thier own little world.
That being said, after you read the names below, unless this is a smokescreen, the Cap movie has FAIL written all over it.   It starts with good casting (Downey Jr., Norton) and then a good script.  All other pieces fall into place after that.   I have nothing against John Krasinski.   He's hilarious on The Office, but sorry, he's not Cap material.  Don't know anything about these other actors, other than they are your who's who of flavor of the day CW station boys.  Be worried true believers, be worried.....

Who are the Contenders for Captain America?
Source:Heat Vision February 24, 2010

Heat Vision is reporting that John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, Patrick Fluger, Scott Porter, Mike Vogel and Chace Crawford are contenders for Marvel Studios' The First Avenger: Captain America. Test screening is taking place this week for one of the actors to play Steve Rogers/Captain America in the comic book adaptation. The site says:

Those known to be on the list with Krasinski include Michael Cassidy (who appeared in"Smallvile" and who tested for the Superman movie when McG was going to direct it), Patrick Fluger (one of the stars of "The 4400" who most recently appeared in the Tobey Maguire movie "Brothers"), Scott Porter (TV's "Friday Night Lights") and Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield")

Chace Crawford is also in talks to screen test, although no deal has been made.

Garret Hedlund was also on the list to test but has fallen off, at least for now, due to his reps and the studio's inability to make a deal.

The studio has put the actors on 30-day holds during the testing process.

This does not necessarily mean that one of the actors will land the role, as it took the studio several rounds of tests before they found Chris Hemsworth for Thor. Joe Johnston will direct the film, which Paramount Pictures will distribute on July 22, 2011.

I have no idea who any of these people are...I guess I'm just old and out of it,

I checked out them on Imdb (No pics of Cassidy), I'm sort of rooting for Scott Porter.

Any of them you people feel looks good for Captain America? Looks is a start, acting comes later like checking out Friday night lights if Porter is a good leader/action star/orator.

Scott Porter seems to have the acting chops and the general look. I think Krazinski is interesting, though.

I just learned Cassidy and Porter are out of the running to play Cap.  Saw their pics, ... they look very similar.

This is starting to sound just like the 1990 Cap movie.  A no-name Cap surrounded with a bunch of popular actors.  We all know how that turned out. The only good thing is that at least I have dropped my expectations and maybe I won't be so upset when I finally see the movie.  That being said, I really am trying to stay optimistic about it. Maybe the no-name will actually do a really good job and surprise everybody.  We have to hope, because we have all waited a very long time for this movie and the thought of it sucking really bothers me.

Condsidering the most popular actor will be Robert Downey Jr.  in the Avengers movie it makes me wonder if all of the spotlight will be on him.  It seems that all of the new superhero stuff, especially for kids (ie, Super Hero Squad),makes Iron Man the center of attention.  Plus, I read one report that they may find a new actor to play Hulk.

I agree with the focus being on Iron Man nowadays but that's just because Iron Man was such a hit and it was the latest successful one to have come out.

I wouldn't care either way if they used Ed Norton or not for Bruce Banner but I think he did do good so it be cool if they did use him.

Anybody heard if they contacted him?

Iron man's enjoying his 15 minute fame, ...
The 1990 Cap movie was a Cap movie but not a Cap movie.  There's that missile, frozen in ice and shield throwing, ...but no cool fight scenes, battle scenes, big spectacular action sequence that rivaled Raiders of the Lost Ark's truck scene.
Superman had an unknown, Reeves, with well known stars Hackman and Brando providing the star power, ... and with the great flying sequences, chemistry between Kidder and Reeves, Supe trying to save San Francisco, some humor, and an uplifting, positive feel of the movie, made it a hit.
With an unknown star, it'll be Captain America, not Star Matt Damon in a silly suit, and with that, add some great action scenes, good story, fights and a cool war scene liken to Saving Private Ryan, I'm sure us fans would love the movie and rave about it, and theres enough material in it to entertain the non-Cap-or-comic-book-fans and movie goers.
Just have an actor that we can sympathize or relate to, convince us that he's a leader and action star, and I'm sure we'll be thrilled and entertained by this movie.
With Krazinski, he's very tall and I'm afraid that he might look like Brad Garret in Everybody loves Raymond (That tall brother),...being that tall, giving that out-of-place look.

here is the right choice

Too bad that Tahmoh Penikett isn't in the running. He's definitely got the look, and from his training in Muay Thai and his role in the new BSG series, I'd have to say he's growing on me.

I just don't see it!  Am I crazy?  How is Krasinski even a viable option?

From Kirby4EVER's link....

"John (Krasinski) has read 4 times and is doing screen tests,"
"He has screen tested 2 times so far.  It's very likely that he will be the new Captain America.  He is a favorite among the key decision makers and has been asked to come back for more this week."

At this point, Krasinski is the main focus at Marvel.

"The big bosses are having him read with multiple actresses up for the female leads.  They want to lock down the role and then they will narrow down everyone else."

Ugh.

And I LOVE The Office!!!

He just isn't the type people are looking for in this role.

I could see him do the song and dance USO stuff. And as Steve Rogers (the 1940s Cap was even drawn a little lanky). But he just doesn't come off as a leader on the battlefield or having the gravitas for this.

Testing for a female lead? What role, I wonder, are they trying to fill? A new character? Betty Ross, perhaps? Peggy Carter?

I heard about the John Krasinski "lock" too.   I look at it this way:  At this point they need to get someone fast so they can get him in the gym and put on some muscle.  (or just roid him up ) I think Krasinski has the acting chops so I'm not worried there.  I'm just worried about his look.  But apparantly the powers at be see something that we aren't.
It appears they are going the Michael Keaton route for this movie.  Keaton was a crazy move at the time for Batman.  I remember everyone was up in arms about his casting.  But, storyline aside, he may have been our best overall Batman at the end of the day.  Bruce Wayne for sure.
So, we'll see if this is true.  I probably won't be screaming to the skies, but at the same time, this whole casting and the way this movie is coming along just feels rushed to me...

Wow, it's on IMDB he's got the part, so good for him.

You know, it's important to realize that he's most famous for a comedy, and so we think of him in terms of goofy comedy.

You know, I hadn't even realized that was him in Leather Heads (one of my favorite George Clooney Movies actually).

He was pretty good in that, and handled the war hero mantle brilliantly.

You know what.  Yeah, he's the best choice for the role.

If you never saw Leatherheads (it's on HBO at least once a week) check it out.  He's the Handsom Young Footballer who is the foil for George Clooney and Renee Zelweiger.

Note he also had a role in Jarhead.

I think you put this guy in the gym, you bulk him up, you CGI his fights (they were going to have to do that or get Jackie Chan to do them anyway) and you've got yourself a Captain America.

Now they're saying it is bunk. It's down to Vogel, Hedlund and aparently Chris Evans.

Personally, I think "they" are pulling our collective chains.

Well, we'll see.  If you haven't seen Leatherheads, I do reccomend you take a look at it before passing judgementon mr. Karanzki.

It's also a cool 1920's period piece.

I liked LEATHERHEADS. It was the in-flight movie for me coming back from Europe and I bought it when it came out used on DVD.

I enjoyed IT'S COMPLICATED which also had Krasinski but he didn't do enough in that film to distinguish myself from his character from The Office. Any shots of him with his hands in his pockets and people are going to think "Jim".

I also very much enjoy THE OFFICE. It might be my favorite show on TV right now. And yet there are times when the actor has to stretch a little more with his emotions like last week's episode when Pam was having her baby and Krasinski needed to show more range as the father but didn't, IMO.
