For the past several years I've been trying to read and re-read the entire Captain America Corpus from beginning to end.  What began as a bit of an obsessive reading journal has morphed into a writing project I'm tentatively calling, The Odyssey of Captain America. I am a high school Civics and Classics teacher, so I've naturally been attracted to Cap as a reflection of cultural attitudes regarding patriotism and the American Dream.  But of late I've become more intrigued with Cap's story as a kind of Classic "Odyssey," a metaphorical journey to return "home."  Mostly for my students, I've created a Facebook fanpage (just search Captain America), where I've begun to post my writings.  I look forward to any comments and direction any of you more accomplished "experts" can provide!

Have your read "Captain America and the Struggle of the Superhero: Critical Essays"?

This book has a more scholarly approach to the character and analyzes the character and book to real events and makes comparisons. It is a series of essays by college professors, instructors, and students.

If anyone's interested, I wrote a 200-page senior honors thesis at Cal on just this topic.  It features Cap and Superman as modern-day incarnations of the King Arthur myth.

200 pages is a lot for me to chew through. There is a program within the regular San Diego Comic-Con that takes a more academic look at comic books. They usually take submissions and have several panels at the con.
