Captain America Targeted for a June Start
Source:Fangoria December 28, 2009

Director Joe Johnston, whose next film The Wolfman hits theaters on February 12, revealed to Fangoria that Marvel Studios is planning a June start for The First Avenger: Captain America. The start is mentioned in an article on Johnston taking over as director for The Wolfman:

Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. “By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three,” recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, which he’s readying for a June start."

Paramount Pictures will distribute The First Avenger: Captain America on July 22, 2011. No cast members have been announced yet.

Fighting Yank: My guess is once Wolfman opens, they're going to announce who they cast for the role.   Wade, you may have a better idea about this than any of us though.

As an actor, all I heard was that Marvel had met with a friend of one of my co-workers who is a very unknown actor. Can't really confirm it since it's second tier knowledge, but I did contact my agent and pass that information on. I took it as good news for me since it show's they are considering unknowns. Just heard before holidays and the casting office won't be back until after new year's.

Of course I'm going to try to get in there, but don't expect to hear anything else from me until AFTER any casting notices. I don't need to blow any opportunities before I get they even know who I am.

Loose lips sink ships!

LA is a big town but Hollywood isn't that big and when people know people who go in for big roles like CAP, word gets around.

Personally, I don't think the role has be cast, but obviously they are meeting with actors (OR COULD BE), but I do think they'll beat feet to cast the lead fairly soon after new years.

Wade, good luck in your attempts. I do freelance writing and know how hard it is to get into art/performance fields. There is a LOT of competition even without name recognition.

Honestly, I'm impressed as I've seen your posts about getting an agent and landing some roles on TV shows.

That's what America is all about--pursuing the dream. At the very least, we'll see if you get IN the movie, even if you don't get the lead. How cool would that be?!

Until then, we'll all wait for the news.

It would be cool to get into the movie somehow if not the lead. An old coworker and I once looked into being an extra on the Ang Lee HULK movie when they shot it in the Bay Area but they wanted young military types (soldier extras) when we were older guys with a paunch. It would have been cool just to be a part of a superhero movie.

Yeah, I expect that we'll hear some casting decisions in the first half of 2010 and they are still meeting with any and all potential actors.

I hope so!

I worked as an extra on the new Indiana Jones just because I wanted the experience. I was one of the russian soldiers in the warehouse at the beginning. I saw Harrison Ford and Spielberg every day I worked! Harrison Ford is in great shape and he can handle the whip for real. I saw him practicing it a few times.

I've done some due diligence on Joe Johnston. He's done several high-profile films: The Rocketeer, Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Jumanji, October Sky, Jurassic Park 3, and Hidalgo.

Of those, I've seen all of them and have decided that he's a very competent director. He works with good actors who deliver good scenes. The problem is he's not always had the best scripts to work with. Like with Jurassic Park 3: good movie, but weak script. I did have a slight problem with the ringing satellite phone inside the Spinosaurus, but that was probably done for some comic relief.

Hidalgo and October Sky were both very well done.

The build-up test will be with The Wolfman. The trailers look great. The movie has some great buzz. It might set Joe up nicely for a summer tent-pole in 2011.

I love October Sky. I could really relate to that one some scenes were filmed where I live. Very inspirational movie too.

I think it was nominated for an Oscar, wasn't it? It was a good movie. Really captured that 50s culture.
