I don't know if anyone remembers this, but back on the old Mego and Pez Captain Americas the top of his Mask, where the A is, was black, this was a coloring technique that they used in the comicbook to off set the A, and somehow when they went into production on the Pez and Mego Hero, rather than a blue mask, they gave Cap a black Mask.

This was eventually corrected with Pez, but Mego to my knowledge continued with the black masked Captain America for their entire run.

I'm curious if anyone ever noticed this error and what they thought of it.  I know that as a kid I was kind of surprised when I first realized Cap's mask was actually blue and not black.

Given all the redesigns of Cap's costume of late I wonder if anyone has utilized this concept into a design.

I myself think it might be an intersting look for cap, to have the darker front of his cowl, but then again it might look stupid in the books.

Anyone have any thoughts?  Does anyone even remember this version of Cap?

My brother and I used to love to disect our pezz dispensers.  Cap and Batman were the best for this, as they had the most pieces that could be removed.

This was back when no body cared if kids choked on plastic so our toys (like the above pezz dispencers) could be taken apart quite easily. Fun fact, once you get the cowl off him, Captain America becomes Charles Xavier.

When they used the black in the comics, I always thought it was suppose to be a shadow and also an artist's technique to make the "A" pop. Funny how if got translated to the other merchandise.

Exactly what I thought!
Same thing with Batman for a while. Well..
When Neal Adams drew Batman in the silver age there was a shade of black on his blue cowl. (Just like Cap's) It wasn't always black, just depends how Batman was drawn in that scene. Sometimes it was really black, others not so much.
Then in the 70's around Superfreinds time Batman's mask was permanently black on his forehead.

When the artist made my Cap costume for me he also made it slightly darker on my mask to represent the black shadow on Cap's mask in the comics.

Here's a closer look at my avatar. Notice the slightly darker shade in the mask.
