I'm guessing that's gross not net, so when you factor in the effects budget, the Hangover winds up far more succesful than likely harry potter or the Transformers.
Still it's an interesting breakdown, and ofcourse Transformer's big money is in ancilliary rights (toy sales, and product tie ins) there aren't many hang over action figures out there.

If you go to Boxofficemojo.com, it'll show you the US Gross, and the International gross and it usually has the budget too. Not all of them though. A lot of times they don't want you to know that a movie bombed as bad as it did so they don't list the budget.

Of course the budget usually doesn't include advertising or the points to actors, producers or other entities on the front end, so even with the raw budget films that had heavy advertising blitzes or big stars commanding dollar 1 percentages still might not have made a profit.
That's one of those wierd things, Cleopatra was for a while both the highest grossing and highest cost film ever made, it didn't turn a profit until sometime in the 90's I believe.

GIJoe made 148 mill, the first Fantastic Four and Xmen movies made about that, 140 to 155. Watchmen and the first Hulk movie made about 110-120. Safe to assume the Cap movie will make over 120 mill and assure a sequel??? Cap isn't in the Blade level in popularity (Blade was a good movie and drew in over 70 mill the first movie). Or we wait for the Thor movie and see how that goes.
Just hope it won't end up like Catwoman, Elektra and Josie and the Pussycats, which earned under 40 mill each.

Sequels are pretty much dependant on the gross vs. the budget. Yes, Blade had two sequels although the first one wasn't really a blockbuster, but it made good money in comparison to the budget. I really like the first one and thought that it didn't need a high budget.
Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four as well as Hulk all made good money, over a hundred million, but they had budgets over a hundred million also, so that is why their is not so much talk of more sequels. I'm not exactly sure of the ratio of overseas boxoffice revenue, but I think the producers get half of the domestic gross and the theater owners get the other half. If that's the case, maybe it's the same for overseas, so a movie would have to gross twice it's budget to break even. Easy for The Dark Knight, not so much for a movie like DareDevil, which still did pretty good, but not fantastic.
I hope Thor packs them in because I think that movie has a very large budget, while I don't think the CAP movie would really require that huge of a budget. I think actual explosions are cheaper to do than CGI ones, and they look better, again see The Dark Knight, explosions galore and they looked great.
All in all, Marvel is pretty good at marketing their movies so if they're going put up a $150 M for a Thor movie, I think they'll make sure people want to see it.

No way. And Cap is much more well known than Blade so he's guaranteed over a 100 million. Over that it depends on how good the movie is and how well it reaches out to the general movie goer. I think they need to focus on getting it right for the fans and making the general audience happy at the same time to ensure victory at the box office. __________________

Two things will determine Cap's Box Office, Fan Acceptance of the story and early reviews.
If fans bash the adaptation the film will sink. Likewise if critics find the effects lacking or the story lack luster it will have a direct effect on the boxoffice.
Sure you and I will probably go to it regardless, but beyond the hard core fans you need a wide swath of people, from casual fans to people who have no idea who Cap is to say, hey that looks cool.
One thing I would suggest is that they avoid the hypersylized sin city look, I thought it worked well for sin city and 300, but thought if failed in the Spirit, which I think will be more similar in tone to Captain America.
Anything that intentionally pulls you out of the experience has to be supported by the thematics of the piece. Marvel Heroes have always had as their central theme their reality, so going for a stylized feel will likely backfire.

Early reviews are critical. WATCHMEN did okay with the comic fans but the rest of the non-comic audience did NOT like this movie at all. So, as they say, the movie didn't have "legs".
After seeing STAR TREK again on Blu-Ray, I'm convinced that Chris Pine would make an excellent Steve Rogers. Looks the part. Likable. Maybe needs to beef up just a little more. They already have the actor that played his father starring as Thor, right? __________________

Fans are very important but yeah fans will go no matter what most likely. Critics are important but as Transformers 2 has proven it isn't what drives box office always.
Of course sequels tend to get people to the theaters almost by impulse it seems. Like a force of habit.
Bottom line is if average Joe and his average family like it and tell all the other average Joes on his block, job, school, etc then it will make a ton. No matter what fans say the average guy is going to ask his buddy or family member that saw the picture last what they thought about it. And then make up their mind to go or not. __________________

Chris Pine? I think Ryan Gosling (The Notebook) would make a great Steve Rogers before the serum.
I was wondering if Cap's long history will draw in the 40s and 50s generation, like Spiderman drew in the 60s generation or the baby boomers. I was surprised that Iron man made over 300 mill.
I mentioned GIJoe, FF and Xmen because those movies got lukewarm critic reviews, but fans loved them. IM got critics outside the comic community raving about that movie, adding to the fans' approval.
Hopefully Cap will be a good movie, watchable, action-driven and present a thoughtful and interesting patriot.

I don't think older generations will see a Cap film. Essentially, at its core, it has to be an action film and pre-boomers just don't go to see those films in droves.
Yup, Chris Pine!! Before seeing STAR TREK, just from early stills, he looked too much like a pretty boy and I worried it would be STAR TREK 90210 but he carried himself well in the picture. __________________

My parents are both 78 & 80 and I have to admit they are intrigued about a lot of the super hero films. My mother is really big on Superman (she's seen them all) and my dad seems interested in the forthcoming Cap film and he's seen the Batman movies. He always used to "borrow" my comics to read before going to bed.

I wish my parents were interested in superhero genre. Well, I got a big brother who was a fan of Conan, FF and Spiderman. He wasn't happy to see the young cast of Star Trek, wanted the original.
