Captain America Message Board / Captain America Message Board / Miscellaneous Captain America Discussion / Happy Birthday JOE SIMON!!
Posted:  14 Oct 2009 03:27
This past Sunday (10/11/09), Captain America co-creator Joe Simon celebrated his 96th Birthday!

If you're reading this Joe......Happy Birthday!!!!

Anyone here ever meet Joe Simon?
Please posts pics or stories if you have.
I wish I have had the pleasure.

I did make him a special birthday card this year though. Chandler from Desert Wind Comics will be giving it to him tomorrow.
Chandler said he's visiting Mr. Simon, and bringing him a cake too.

Dude, Your cards came out awesome! Any word on who won the art? I did a watercolor of Caps original shield and made a B-Day card out of that. Forgot to take a pic of it tho.

Aww Tim no photo!?!?
Maybe Chandler took a pic of Joe reading it?
I'm hoping he got a photo of Joe with my 4 page card as well.
Also no, no word on who won the art....yet.
I doubt it was me though, as I'm pretty sure the winner was notified already.

What was the prize anyway, was it an art piece drawn by Mr. Simon?
Wow, what an awesome rare treat that would be too have in any collection!

I saw Chandler at the Big Apple Con but I was so busy running around that I totally forgot to ask. Yeah your right, I'm sure they notified the person already. Nobody has come forward on the CGC boards to say they won, so maybe he will send it as a surprise when you get your books back. At Least I hope its that way lol. Maybe he took a group shot of Joe with all the cards around him.

I eneded up submitting 2 more books to another witness who was having a signing this past tuesday. Two more of the German reprints. I'm going to have like 15 Joe Simon SS books. I really really want to get a pic with Joe and I. Thats my focus now. Next time the witness I just submitted my books to has a signing I'm going to beg him to let me go with him.

Yes you gotta get a pic with Joe!!!
If I lived in the area, that would be my main goal also.
I have pics with many of my favorite writrs/artsts, but the one that I really want I don't have......
STERANKO!!!
I have met him three times and twice he turned me down for a photo.
(I didn't even ask the first time)
He was polite about it and has his reasons, he signed for me many of things, even sold me some vintage art at a discount rate. Really cool guy that I have talked to for about 30+ minutes each time.
Awesome nice guy, I'm a huge fan, but the dude won't let me take a photo of him.

I have seen a few photos of him with people online.
He wil usually take a photo with celebs for sure, but with everyday guys it's rare.
(I've had a few people try besides me, they were turned down as well)

I know Steranko does like the flash because his eyes are sensitive to the light (hence the sunglasses all the time). But you are right, I have seen some photos out there with him and other artists so it can't be a hard rule with him.
Posted:  24 Oct 2009 23:54
does NOT, I should say (darn late night typing skills!)
Posted:  25 Oct 2009 00:38
Yeah I saw him turn down a few people and even one person who was just taking his picture from a distance, he waived his hand and basically said no thanks. He is super nice about it though. Keeps a smile on his face.

When talking to Steranko at SDCC this year, he politely declined a photo, telling me an incident that happened when he used to box in his teen years. (Steranko a boxer? Isn't there anything this guy doesn't do!?!! Ha ha)
Anyways he told me he got hit in the eye wrong as a teen, and ever since then camera flashes cause him great big migraine headaches. Which is why he rarely takes photos.
I then politely asked him for a photo with the flash tuned off.
He then told me that if someone sees me taking a photo with him, then everyone around would start asking him.
As we are talking my camera is in my hand, someone walks by and sees me talking to Steranko with the camera in my hand and they start coming up asking him for photos.
He looks at me and says, "See what I mean, Sam"
I told him I understood, put my camera away, and thanked him again for signing all my stuff.

The guys really don't like having picutres taken. I can undertand, those flashes gives me headaches.

Steranko a boxer? Isn't there anything this guy doesn't do!?!! Ha ha

Steranko was also an escape artist.  From bits and tidbits that I've heard over the years.

Exactly what I meant, his list just goes on & on
He's an escape artist, magician, musician, artist, etc.... and now he tells me he was a boxer too LOL!

Here's part of an introduction on him from my Nick Fury Shield TPB...

Escape artist was what I remembered reading in that Nick Fury tpb -- thanks for reminding me.  Growing up, I got some of my first info on comic books from Steranko's History of comic books.  Later, some people questioned his articles and research on the Golden age, but it was interesting read, especially his chapter on Captain America and a contributing pencil art by Jack Kirby(Later, Alex Ross inked over it for a print) .
Anyone seen or read Steranko's History of comic books???

Joe Simon, Captain America co-creator (along with Jack "King" Kirby) received my b-day card!

I just wanted to share some pictures from the Joe Simon event.
(These photos are borrowed from the CGC board)

This is the big birthday banner fans signed for Joe at several cons.
I signed it at the Long Beach comic con in October, my chicken scratch autograph is right above Stan Lee.....

Here is Joe holding up his birthday banner....
(Also that is Chandler & Sharon in the picture who arranged this private signing)

Below is Joe and the birthday card I made for him...

The last three photos below are of Joe signing some comic books.
I believe the books in the picture are my books, but I'm not 100% sure. (They look to be the same books I submitted)

I submitted 5 books for Joe to sign for me to be witnessed by Chandler and then shipped to CGC.
The comics I submitted were.....
Captain America #100, 109, 383, and Avengers #4 which was also signed by Stan Lee.
And of course I also submitted the Cap #1 German reprint which Dell Rusk (Tim) sent to me.

I will of course post pics of the CGC books when they get back to me, however I went with the economy service so I'm guessing it may at least be a few months till I see them again.

Thanks for posting the pics! That's awesome.

Awesome card Sam!

You should have Fast Tracked the 3 silver age books. Would have been done in 20 business days. Its $8 more per book. Slashes the time in half. I think thats my Cap #454 in the one shot with your #109.

I wonder if he is doing a Fallen Son Blank for you. I see some on the table and hes practicing coloring it on a photocopy. I would tell Chandler that if thats what he sends to him then get it graded. Fast track it for $24 and you get it back in 2 weeks.
