OK, I really like this character (Kato too---I mean really, has there been more of a badass sidekick than Kato?  He was played by Bruce Lee for cryin out loud) anyway, is there anyone besides me really worried about this movie with Seth Rogen as Britt Reid/GH?  I really hope they don't make a mockery of a character that in certain ways is more cool than dare I say, Batman.
I do have to say that the Black Beauty and the Kato costumes do look pretty cool, but I have a bad feeling about this......
How bout you guys?

I had a bad feeling the first time I heard Seth Rogan was going to be in it. I mean remember when I jumped all over people who were defending the April Fool's day prank that Rogen was going to play Steve Rogers?

You probably don't but I still don't think this movie is going to be very good. I loved Bruce Lee, but other than that I was never into Green Hornet, and to be honest, I don't even know to much about him. I guess that means I don't hate him but I was never to interested in the character.

I do hope the movie does okay though since it's part of the superhero genre and will help the genre if it does well.

Hey Wade,
The whole Green Hornet thing was originally a radio show back in the late 30's and movie serials in the 40'. It became a TV show in the 60's due to the success of the campy Batman TV show. I think the Green Hornet holds up better because it had a more serious tone to it. Going back in the 30's it was created by the same person who created the Lone Ranger. It was supposedly going to be called the Hornet but changed to the Green Hornet as Green ones are supposedly the meanest & the name would be easier to copywrite.

i'm a big green hornet fan myself. it was an odd choice putting rogen in the lead on this. i like seth rogen but he's a comedy actor. but who knows.. everyone said affleck would ruin daredevil and i thought he did an allright job. i say give it a chance.

I'm going to try to cling to some hope.  I remember everyone raising a big stink when they cast Michael Keaton as Batman.  I thought it was an odd choice too, but he pulled it off.  Of course Keaton is a much better actor than Rogen, but that's neither here nor there.
I just don't want them to make it into a "Batman and Robin" type movie.  That would hurt.

I personally don't see Seth Rogan in the Role, but then again he may want a role other than the kinds he's played specifically.

He can get into shape, and there could be a great deal of comedy in the concept.

GH doesn't have the history that BM has so I don't think there is quite the commitment to continuity that some people would require.

The 60's show was pretty campy, and the original radio show was just action adventure for the kids.  I don't think GH ever developed in his comic personae a great deal of back story from which to derive pathos, so in that it's pretty much a blank slate for the film makers.

I think it could work nicely especially if they reimagine Kato as heroic driver of man about town Britt Reid becoming Green Hornet.  I think that's basicly how they packaged Green Hornet in the 60's when they sold it to Hong Kong (Bruce was huge in Hong Kong).

I agree 100%. The Green Hornet was infact only put in the batman show for that reason. to sell bruce lee and the show to an international audience. The best parts of those episodes to me were seeing Bruce Lee and Burt Ward (robin) fight. a lot of people didn't know this but Ward was himself a first degree black belt in hapkido and a brown belt in karate. Ward was accused of using a stunt double in those scenes but it was all him. Very impressive. Bruce Lee himself credited him for his skills and said he was great to work with.

I dunno, i don't get so weirded out about actors they choose to play these movies so much anymore. i just give it a chance and see the movie when it comes out. so many actors are chosen for these roles that are "questionable" but always come thru. at least for me.

They said casting Downy Jr. as iron man would be suicide. seriously, he owned that movie. he made it what it was.

They bombed the original punisher movie and blamed it on Lundgren. Iv'e taken a LOT of #@%* for saying this but I think he captured the psychosis of the character way better than Jayne did. That movie failed because of a crappy script and crappy directing. period.

Again, Affleck as daredevil. They doomed it out of the chute. I was very upset by the casting on this until i watched it. it was a damn good movie and Affleck worked his ass off to stay as true to the chatacter as he could. he did a great job.

The Batman movies.

Keaton- Great bruce wayne, crappy batman. But good movies all around.

Kilmer- Better batman, crappy bruce wayne. bad movie.

Clooney-

Bale- Would be perfect if he did something about that batman voice.

there's a lot of movies coming out with questionable casting choices. i just learned to give em all a chance. iv'e seen actors really step up in these movies. i was weird about Ryan Renyolds doing green lantern but the production stills look amazing. i'll give it a shot. the dude they cast for Thor is some huge swede who prolly sucks. lets wait and see. Hopefully rogen will step up and not dissapoint.

I don't mind Rogan in that Green Hornet role, basically GH is the investigator, solves the crime or explain the drama or leads the viewers through the movie, it's Kato that's important, he's the Action hero, the dynamic, the fighter, the motion, the guy who drives that cool car.  He's suppose to make GH look good.  But after seeing a pic of the actor in that Kato mask, he just looked awful.  Should've got that hot babe in Rush Hour 2 to play Kato.  Or check out Kill Bill pt1, they made the Kato mask looked good on those guys Thurman killed.

JBB,

I wiki'd Green Hornet after posting that reply. I thought it was just the show from the sixites. Good to see that it has a longer, richer history than that. While I'm not a fan of Rogan as this character, I do think they are putting a comidic edge on it, so maybe it'll work. I did think Lundgren was fine as The Punisher. Of course I liked both Jane and Stephenson too. I'm a Punisher fan so seeing him on film is always cool. If only they gave Lundgren the suit and a MUCH better script it would have been pretty good. Anyway, I hope it comes out well. All comic movies could be good. The character's that have been around for a long time have been around a long time for a reason. They are pretty good.

You know the problem with the punisher films has always been the story and the direction.

In the first two they made the death of his family too personal to the mobsters.  They were killed because of Frank Castle, making Frank's psychosis more main stream, which I think hurts the character.  The Punisher is about how a random act can destroy a persons life.  His family was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and that's what drove him mad.

In the last one it was good, up until they brought out Jigsaw.  They made him too campy, and I think it just ruined what was otherwise a really good Punisher film.

There's pics on the web of Rogen and Chou in costume.  They don't look bad, although I would prefer a darker green but that's just being nit-picky.
As for the Punisher, I was never a big fan of the character and the movies just didn't hold my interest.  I thought both Lundgren and Jane did ok for the script that was given them.

I saw the last Punisher movie on a bootleg copy, worst 3 bucks spent.  Then on TV, Heat was on.  DeNiro and Pacino fighting each other in a Cops and Robber movie, why can't they do a good Cops and Robber movie for the Punisher???  Punisher isn't space invaders or world destroyers, it's a crime drama.
Latest on GH, Battlestar Galatica's Adama, Olmos is added to the cast, with Cameron Diaz.  Diaz might help draw some attention.  I'm sorry about Chou, he doesn't look good with that mask hanging on his face. Has to have some edge, or danger look to it.  Rogan, I have to watch that security guard movie he was in, I heard he was 'serious' or 'dramatic' in it.  I barely liked Keaton as Batman, difficult to forget Keaton's comedic history going into that movie.

Matches, I agree. I think the reason we haven't seen a decent punisher movie is exactly what you said. Bad scripts and even worse directing. I think the only way wer'e ever going to see a great punisher movie is if someone is allowed to go over the top with it (ennis style) and i don't see it happening. Altho i gotta say of all the punisher films, the original with lundgren is still my favorite.

Which was the one with John Travolta in it? I enjoyed the dark humour that came through in that, particularly the way in which Frank got his final revenge.

I haven't seen the first one (1989 wasn't it?) but I'll try to get a copy.

Was the Travolta one the second or third?

1985 to 1990, Marvel was bought by New Line Cinema, some Aussie company, they made that 1990 Punisher movie, starring Dolph Lundren and Louis Gossett Jr (Only people I remember).  No skull tshirt or flak jacket, just Lundren riding a Harley, shooting Italian and Japanese bad guys, and moping/lamenting on his dead wife and children in a dark sewer. Available on Video tapes, might be on late night tv, you'll like it for the shooting and such, but not a good movie.
The second Punisher, 2000 something, much better, starred Travolta, heavily borrowed from the Ellis Punisher mini series, Welcome back Frank.  I think when they got Travolta, they rewrote the script to better showcase him.  I liked the WWE wrestler playing the Russian.
The third Punisher, 2008, just dark, dismal, unlikeable, character was boring. Story was so so. That Jigsaw badguy just got sillier as the movie progressed.
Posted:  18 Oct 2009 12:25
Definatly. The Russian was played by Kevin Nash. He's done so many roles like that. He's awesome! He was also the super shredder in ninja turtles 2 LOL!
Posted:  18 Oct 2009 18:47
Kevin Nash, thanks, I couldn't remember the wrestler's name at that time.  Think he could play Crossbone?

I think the people who like the Punisher do so because they see that he's not just a guy who kills criminals. He's a guy who stands up because he can, because he must, because in the face of all that's evil in the world he can't walk away.

He deals in death because that's the only trade his enemies understand. They're not afraid of the cops, not afraid of the law. The law can be bought. The Punisher can't be.

Anyways, I enjoyed the episode of Batman which guest starred the Green Hornet. As long as they don't play on his name and make him a tree hugger I'll go see the movie. Jet Li would make a great Kato, but I don't think they'd get a big name in like that.
Posted:  19 Oct 2009 17:23
I think Jet Li is probably on the short list, they need a guy that can follow bruce lee, and given the status of Kato in Chinese popular culture while Jet Li was growing up, I can imagine that he'd jump at the chance.

All that being said, I think they might want to go younger, and get some fresh faced "Next Big Action Star out of Hongkong" for the role.

Heck they might even go for a female Kato, but that creates a sexual dynamic in the story that they might not want.
