I love World War II stuff so while me and the wife were vacationing at Myrtle Beach we drove another hour down to see the Battleship North Carolina which is a real life ship that saw lots of action in World War II.

My wife and the ships guns.

It's definitely a weird feeling walking around the ship trying to imagine what it would have been like to be on it during World War II. Kind of gives you a lump in your throat to think about all those real life heroes that fought for our country.

They say she shot down lots of enemy air planes and took a torpedo hit once, but during the whole war only lost 10 men. She was sent out first in response to Pearl Harbor.

Good photos and, wow, those are some big guns on that ship.

My Dad's ship was the USS Stansbury, a destroyer that did mine sweeping in the North Atlantic and South Pacific and was involved in the battles of Guam and Saipan, apparently. She got scrapped right after the war.

He doesn't talk about the war that much but, from time to time, I pick his brain about those days. He does have a WWII photo album with many photos taken aboard the ship, which gives me some idea of what life was like on the ship.

My girlfriend's father, who just passed away on Labor Day, was a marine during WWII and we want to research if our fathers ever crossed paths. I need to consult with my Uncle too. I think he was in Patton's army.

That's cool. I love everything from that era especially WW2 war movies like Patton for example. It's a shame they scrapped some of those ships. Glad they saved the North Carolina Battleship. Sure is an important part of history.

Those pics are REALLY cool!
Wow the ships & guns are HUGE!!
I wonder of there is something like that here in California that I could visit?
Looks like an awesome field trip for the kids.

Sam, I haven't come across anything like that in California. Maybe it does exist. However, there are some alternate ideas.....

If at the San Diego Comic-Con, they have their Maritime Museum just up the street from the convention center. The girlfriend and I went there after Comic-Con last year. No battleships or anything but they do have The Rose/H.S.S. Surprise from the Master and Commander movie, the Star of India, a Russian sub, and a few other smaller vessels.

Up here in the Bay Area, San Francisco also has a Maritime museum but they are older ships.

Out at Suisun Bay, there is the Mothball fleet, which I've always been fascinated with. There is a very expensive private tour and then a public tour on the last weekend of each month. About $30 and I'm thinking of doing it one day unless I can find someone with a boat. I don't think they allow any onboard tours though.

In the Mothball fleet is the U.S.S. Iowa. Apparently, it is waiting donations to become a museum ship one day (hopefully still anchored in the bay).

Doing more research, looks like the USS Hornet (aircraft carrier) in Alameda is a museum ship...
