Lets learn by example, Hercules the legendary journey, ...I loved the series, I loved the light-hearteness, escapatism fun of that series, and when it came out, I thought I was going to get to enjoy a mini-series, ...but Kevin Sorbo won a lot of fans, especially female fans, and it was enough to keep that series going for years, ...likewise with Xena (With a lot of male fans).  Not enough fans to support Kull movie and he lost them when he made Andromeda (Should've made a doctor or cop tv show).
For Cap, I thought Paul Walker could take that role, he became famous due to Fast and the Furious, but people saw Into the blue for Jessica Alba and Walker couldn't carry that Disney movie about Snow dogs.  I didn't like Quantum of Solace, but everyone loved Daniel Craig and made the movie a hit.  The Rock is still charming and charismistic enough to carry some of the weak movies that he made and are still entertaining for his fans.  I think he should go for Thor (A sandy, dirty blond Thor).
I'm really not interested in Channing Tatum, but he seems to be a rising star, like Tobey Maguire before Spider man, and the only rising star that seems to fit in the role.  It's that 15 minute of fame I hope would attract more of the non-comic book(NCB) fans to the Cap movie, like Downey and Macguire.
On the other hand, Hugh Jackman was tall and lean, unlike the comic book Wolverine, yet with a series of dramas, romantic movies and hosting the Oscars, managed to build up a lot of ncb fans since his debut in the first Xmen movie.
Just keep watching, reading and hearing entertainment news and you'll notice rising stars, 15 minute fame and jumping the couch moments and you'll see my point of view, so keep rapping about Cap and keep recommending actors.  But also start pointing out some bad points, Please, it's the only way to keep that 90s Cap train wreck from happening again.
