"Captain America" recruits director
Monday November 10 7:14 AM ET

"Jurassic Park III" director Joe Johnston has signed a deal to bring the Marvel comic-book hero Captain America to the big screen.

"First Avenger: Captain America," a World War II-set movie, is scheduled for release in 2011 through Marvel Studios. No writers are on board, but the studio expects to hire shortly.

Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he became a symbol of the war effort, in and out of comics.

The character disappeared in the 1950s but was revived during the early era of Marvel Comics. He was reintroduced as part of the all-star Avengers lineup, the absence explained by having him being in a state of suspended animation during a war mission until found by the superteam.

The character's last live-action appearance was in 1990's "Captain America," a cheap indie production that ended up going to straight to video. The movie starred Matt Salinger as the hero, dethawed in modern times to fight his archnemesis, the Red Skull.

Johnston first met with Marvel two years ago. When the two parties clicked, general talks turned into Captain America-specific meetings, with much of the project's current direction resulting from those early conversations.

Kicking off with "Iron Man," Marvel Studios' slate of movies -- including "Thor" and the "Iron Man" sequel -- is building toward an "Avengers" movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure.

Johnston is in post-production on Universal's retelling of "The Wolfman," starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.

Cap Director Joe Johnston Facts

He provided the final designs for "Star Wars" characters Yoda and Boba Fett.

Answered an ad while a student at Cal State-Long Beach, which was looking for employees. That ad was for George Lucas whom Johnston became acquainted with. He was employed a storyboard artist who would watch Lucas do his editing. Eventually, Johnston decided to leave Lucas' company and travel with the money he had saved up. But Lucas suggested that he go to USC film school (his alma mater), which Lucas would get him to the front of the line for applicants, pay for his tuition, and keep Johnston as a part time employee with his salary. Johnston said he would have been crazy not to accept the offer and immediately said yes.

As long as he doesn't go for George Lucas-style dialogue, I'm on board. This from superherohype.com:

Joe Johnston has signed on to direct Marvel Studios' First Avenger: Captain America, based on characters developed by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. The film will be produced by Marvel Studios' President Kevin Feige. Executive Producers on the project are Louis D'Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios' Chairman David Maisel. Paramount Pictures will distribute First Avenger: Captain America worldwide. The film will come to theaters domestically on May 6, 2011.

Here's the official logline: In the early days of the Marvel Universe, Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Johnston is currently directing The Wolfman, which hits theaters on April 3. He is developing The Death and Life of Charlie St. Cloud. Johnston previously directed October Sky, Jumanji, Jurassic Park III, The Rocketeer and Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. Johnston won an Academy Award® in 1982 for Best Visual Effects for Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Marvel Studios most recently announced an agreement with Raleigh Studios to film each of its next four films at Raleigh’s facility in Manhattan Beach, CA which will include First Avenger: Captain America.

Yes, he sounds like a good choice from what I have read. Good source of past film work.

Can't believe that Lucas did all that for him. He must really be worth his (very expensive) USC tuition for somebody go that far for him. Pretty sure Lucas must think he is a really good guy to do something like that. That is a good sign.

I'm stoked (that's californian for excited).

He'll be hearing from me

Why the dude from J.P.?

Check out Rocketeer, the movie was very loyal to the book and firmly set in the 30s.  Directed by Johnston and the only thing that was majorly altered was Jennifer Connelly's character that went from Betty to Jenny (Some licensing snafu the movie tried to avoid with the 50's model Betty Page).
I loved the Rocketeer.  Great movie, made a profit, stylist and not-overly campy and silly.  Plus, it had great action, explosions and fun scenes with planes of that era.  I believe Johnston can do a good job with First Avenger, Captain America.

Actually just downloaded the movie the other day on a whim, and I gotta say, it holds up pretty well.  I was actually thinking that if the director of this could direct Cap, and if the actor was still young enough (very much not the case), it'd be perfect for Cap.  But hey, one out of two ain't bad.

I'm thinking that they might drop "First Avenger" from the title as to not get it confused with "THE Avengers" film afterwards. Why not "Captain America: operation rebirth"? Good to finally hear something on this movie.

I'm curious, though. I had heard for awhile that Antman & Wasp would be one of the films leading up to the Avengers, though its starting to look like they're going to incorporate those minor characters in Iron Man 2 or something like that. Thoughts?
