Favreau told Ain't it Cool News. "For one because we put the shield in there and Tony's legacy… Howard Stark's legacy somehow is related to… there's some relationship between Tony's father and what was going on in World War II, in the Marvel Universe, and Shield, so we're trying to lay some pipe here so that when it all happens it feels somewhat inevitable."
This could turn out to be pretty interesting. We already saw Dr. Erskine's name on the cryo tank holding the Super Soldier Serum, and now, just like in the comics, they're sort of taking the Weapons Plus element and fleshing it out to show that, like in Ultimate Origins, everything is connected. Personally, I would have liked to have had the original scientist who created the shield by accident in there, but I think this really bolsters the intra-universe connections and provides a generational connection between Cap and Tony, who go on to become close friends. Perhaps it develops a fater-son surrogate relationship between the two, with Tony seeing Cap as the answer to the questions he posed about his father during his first press conference back from the Middle East. Maybe he'll see Cap as the redemption of his father, who, until now, we have only known as a weapons developer and death dealer, to an extent. The two of them (Tony and Steve) serve as a sort of redemption of Howard Stark's legacy. Thoughts?
