Quote:
John Barrowman, the star of "Torchwood," was just asked moments ago at the San Diego Comic-Con panel if there was any possibility that he would be playing Captain America in the upcoming feature film.

He smiled and gave the stock answer that he'd love to play the character and that Captain America has always been his favorite comic book superhero. Clearly, though, the notion did not take him by surprise and he ended up admitting there had been discussions with his agents and meetings on that very issue.

What do you think? Though maybe not the star-power that the studio might be looking for, Barrowman certainly fits the bill. We'll bring you more news as it develops.

I'll put it to as gently as possible. If this guy is Cap I will not go see Captain America. I will not even rent it.

You can read his bio for yourself http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0057882/bio

This isn't the kind of guy that I want to represent America to the world. You can come to your own conclusions as to why, but I'm not going to argue about it. I'm just not. I just won't pay to see this movie and I'll not mention it anymore if this guy is Cap.

I should add though I don't think he will be chosen. There is probably a list a mile long of potential actors that want this role.

Just like Superman Returns there will be rumors circulating about Cap till the actor is chosen.

If they have any sense at all they'll pick somebody that everyone can get behind. Somebody not controversial or super political.

I familiar with him from Doctor Who, but I don't know if I would want him as Steve Rogers. I kind of like Michael Shanks for the role.

Torchwood?
Posted:  25 Jul 2008 18:24
I just read his biography, and I have changed my mind. There is no way I would want this guy to be Captain America. A man like this should not be representing our country.
Posted:  25 Jul 2008 23:17
Well let me be the one that blows the lid off of why a lot of you don't want him for CAP....

....He's from Scotland!!
Posted:  25 Jul 2008 23:42
Michael Shanks, as in Daniel Jackson SG1? A bit left field, better than John Barrowman.

Tim, I can understand what you are saying (and I agree), but sometime's mate, you can't all ways be happy with who is going to represent you to the world, but I hear you and nuff said Brother.

MMMMmmm

I watch Torchwood and I do not really like him. He does not come across very "mocho" and, I think, his acting is only passable.

Posted:  26 Jul 2008 02:20
Well, once again, another example of what I've said from the beginning----I don't have a whole lot of confidence in the Captain America movie being done correctly.  Again, I hope I'm wrong, I really do.  Like Tim said, he probably won't be chosen, but if he's part of the list of actors they are considering, allow me to be the first to do an Archie Bunker to the whole "casting consideration list":
Posted:  26 Jul 2008 03:21
Saw the pic, read a little bit about him, going to have to watch Torchwood.  He has that cleft on his chin, just like Steve Rogers/Cap.  Anyway, Adventures of Cap, by Nizieta and Mcguire, stated Rogers to be Irish descent, born in New York city, 1920.  Bendis later mentioned in Wizard that Cap was probably born behind a bakery, which doesn't make him less of heroic or iconic figure, makes him human and adds to his character.  Should all heroes come from rich families or from another planet?
Posted:  26 Jul 2008 04:46
Where he came from had nothing to do with why we don't want John Barrowman to represent Captain America.
Posted:  26 Jul 2008 13:34
It'll probably cause a rucus but I think John Barrowman might be a good choice. Now before I get blasted I hope you can see we've had a Batman actor (probably the best) Christian Bale who without reading his bio you'd never know he was born in Wales, NOT the US of A. Plus Barrowman has a build much like an olympic athelete which Roger's should be, not some massive pumped up steroid looking freak. Bottom line yes Captain America is a symbol but we still have to remember this is going to be only a movie and not creating a REAL Captain America. I'm defensive of Cap also as having read my first comic of him a good 3 years before Marvel revived him in the early 1960's.
Posted:  26 Jul 2008 15:02
I don't think it would be good for Marvel if the media found out that they chose a "gay Captain America."
Posted:  26 Jul 2008 18:36
Marvel will not pick an actor who will politicize one of its properties. They want to get a share of everyone's money.

Personally, I could care less what the actor is/does in his life off-screen, as long as the person nails the role (Downey, Bale, Ledger, McGuire, etc.) …

I wouldn't care near as much if he just played on the movie but just not as Captain America.  I can see it now Cap kissing guys and getting his nails done in between beating Nazis. It would end up being a big Saturday Night Live skit.

Let me just add I picture Cap's personality as being somewhat a cross between Superman and John Wayne. America and cowboys go hand and hand. You just got to have that American spirit of independence that cowboys have in Cap.

O.K. , I'm sorry I didn't read a bio about his ( Barrowman) sexual preferance! I'm in total agreement about not having a gay play Cap.Like I said before I've seen the two bad movies made about Cap in the last few decades and really want them to use an actor who has the physical appearance (not a pumped up look like these WWF freaks) and the lead actor experience in him (not a bunch of bit parts).

I have my full confidense in Marvel. I don't think they're going to screw up Captain America. He's their golden boy.
Posted:  27 Jul 2008 02:12
I see Captain America as the personification of the traditional moral values of the 1940s. What John Barrowman is cannot be considered "traditional".
Posted:  27 Jul 2008 05:03
John Barrowman definitely looks the part, and according to what ive read, he was at least mostly raised in the US even if he was born in Scotland. But really i'd think of better choices than either him or Michael Shanks (Shanks his Canadian) While I like both actors, and I may be sounding a bit nationalistic, but I think Captain America should be played by an American.
Posted:  27 Jul 2008 05:07
I didn't know Shanks was Canadian. What about Eric Johnson? (He played Whitney in the first season of Smallville, and also starred in the series Flash Gordon.)

Whoever plays Cap needs to be somebody who resembles Cap, can act, and I believe has to be genuine in their love for the character and their love for America. I want to believe when I watch Captain America the movie that this guy is somebody that would really die for his country and his beliefs. I wish they could go with a real life soldier turned actor. What a great way to draw attention to Cap by having a real soldier play his part.

Does anybody remember the old actor that was a war hero and wound up playing a war hero in the movies? This was way back in the 40's. I remember my dad telling me about him but I forgot his name.

I remember. He happens to be one of my favorite actors. He is also the most decoratated soldier in American history. Audie Murphy.

The movie was called To Hell And Back  (released in 1955) which was based on Murphy's 1949 autobiography of the same title.

I just love the debate over what should consist of someone who plays Captain America. Y'know with almost every other character its kinda like "who cares, if they make it work." But with Cap he's gotta BE the character. I think it attributes to the type of character that captain america really is, which to me is awesome. Alot of those characteristics are great.

When I see a Cap movie I want to suspend disbelief and the real world as much as possible and really if for only a couple of hours believe Captain America is alive on the screen. Just fun to be a big kid and have your heroes come to life. Not any fun though if you get distracted with someone playing Cap with political and moral issues that distract from the presentation.

Marvel knows choosing Barrowman would cause a big stink, so I don't think they'd be stupid enough to try it.

Everyone keeps saying we need the right guy for Cap, "Whoever plays Cap needs to be somebody who resembles Cap, can act, and I believe has to be genuine in their love for the character and their love for America. I want to believe when I watch Captain America the movie that this guy is somebody that would really die for his country and his beliefs. I wish they could go with a real life soldier turned actor." But is there really anybody out there like that, that also looks like Steve Rogers? Finding someone with all those characteristics isn't going to be easy.

They better start auditions soon.

Who else would probably be in the film? I've thought up actors for some of the roles, but for some of them, I'm still drawing a blank. Let me know if I overlooked anyone.
Captain America/Steve Rogers- Eric Johnson or Michael Shanks, that's the best I can do
Bucky Barnes- Shia LaBeauf
Peggy Carter- Yvonne Strahovski (maybe?)
Baron Zemo- Anybody got any ideas?
Red Skull- Again, no clue. I don't know much about German actors.

Alright, I appreciate wanting an American to be Cap.  I do, too, but it isn't my number one priority in looking for a candidate.  Neither, frankly, is his sexual preference.  The number one qualification has to be acting ability, with looks being right after that, because those are the two features that determine how good a job he'll do as Cap.

Are you guys seriously saying that a gay man can't play Cap?  A gay man played Magneto, and did a phenominal job.  A gay man directed X-Men and Superman, and did a great job with X-Men.  The Joker and Wolverine were both played by Australians, Charles Xavier was played by a Brit, and Angel was played by the same guy that played Spacker Dave, for Christ's sake.

I have never watched Dr. Who or Torchwood, so I can't say anything one way or another about this guy's acting ability.  I will NOT discount him because he's gay or Scottish.  If they can find an actor to do that job that's American, great.  I'm all for it.  If this guy is the best man for the job, then I can't wait to see it.
