Dalton is oooooold. Downey is pushing it. Besides, his problem has always been with coke, not booze. He'll probably be up before the crew and ready to work. He might not even sleep at all. He might sleep in the suit.
I mean, I don't have a huge problem with him being cast, but Iron Man is going to be a clunky enough operation as it is. I'm not sure what he can offer. He certainly isn't the new "it" guy, since he missed that while in jail 15 years ago. Maybe Downey will bring older people in that don't normally care about comics. I doubt it. This could be another Daredevil.
Iron Man is going to be a tricky operation anyway. The character is great if you know of him, but many don't, so why not just go with a younger more Tony Stark looking person. When I visualize Downey with a mustache, I keep coming up with Geraldo. Bad sign.
Personally, I think they oughta throw a mustache on one of the guys from Battle Star Galactica and have them do it. Go with a cheap actor and spend money on a good script and director. I've done some acting and honestly, too much is made of it. Really the make up girls, the art crew, the camera team, the director and THE WRITERS make the picture a good movie or not. All the actors do it signal what kind of movie it is to the public. Mel Gibson? Oh, thriller or Patriotic. Tom Hanks? Gushy and life affriming. Brad Pitt? Flashy, edgy and possibly preachy.
The less than enthusiastic reception of Superman Returns wasn't Brandon Routhe's fault, it was part of a superhero genre that is starting to get a bit bloated with time. They should have simplified that whole movie. But hey, stuff wears out by the end of a decade. Spider-Man 1 was our Pearl Jam and X-Men our Nirvana and we may get Ghost Rider and Iron Man as our Creed and Third Eye Blind.
