My sister actually recommended I not take my kids to it because of some of the risquee humor, she specifically referenced "Sam's Happy Time'. Any thoughts, Tim?

Well that's true, not sure I'd take little kids. That was probably the crudest moment of the film. There was one other toward the beginning with a old lady flipping a car dealer off. I'd say this is definitely a teenager movie. For the most part it's pretty good morally speaking. There were times the use of foul language would have made more sense like when the soldier while being attacked had to deal with one of those Indian guys on the phone while trying to get in touch with the Pentagon. The phone worker kept trying to sell him something, wanted a credit card etc while the soldiers were been bombed by an evil Decepticon. It would have seemed more natural there to curse, but a soldier being attacked dealing with the phone company didn't say anything that I heard.
But still if you have little kids that ask a lot of questions and pay a lot of attention to everything that's being said on a movie then I'd say just rent it and watch it by yourself. __________________

Its unfortunate that movies marketed to kids have to have that kind of stuff in them, but I suppose its a sign of the times.
Its also interesting to me how many older movies have very dramatic scenes even onvolving warfare (WWII movies) and yet no one feels the need to shout out cuss words.

Quote: Its also interesting to me how many older movies have very dramatic scenes even onvolving warfare (WWII movies) and yet no one feels the need to shout out cuss words. yeah, they seemed to know how to create drama without cursing. There are levels though in movies. Most movies curse so much it seems unnatural and unrealistic. I can kind of see war scenarios using strong language, but it goes way too over the top when everybody is cussing for almost no reason at all. There are times I admit it can make me laugh, but only when it seems like somthing I would say like when I'm changing a tire. I can relate to those kinds of circumstances I guess, but this constant barrage of cursing just seems absurd. I see your concern over kid movies too. There ought to be almost no cursing at all on a movie kids might watch. Of course most animated features don't seem to have swear words, just the superhero movies. The rating system has never been fool proof when it comes to trying to keep kids from watching bad stuff. It all depends on the movie. Like take Rambo 3. It's rated R and if memory serves me it has one cuss word that I remember and that's the f word toward the very end. I could be wrong, but I'm thinking it only had one anyway. For one cuss word it got rated R, and the violence didn't seem that bad to me. __________________

I worry, as a Christian, that I still remain too familiar with the worlds way of entertaining and that due to A) not getting saved till I was in my 20's and B) still living in the modern world that I'm desensitized to things that would have horrified and offended movie goers 50 years ago. I catch myself being willing to put up with crude humor and vulgarity for entertainments sake when really I have no justification to be entertained by that stuff at all.
As Americans in this modern age we have an entertainment addiction , I think. (sorry Tim, I know this is way off topic) Consider how often people 100 years ago got to see a movie or play. Their days consisted of work and sleep and more work and occassionally they'd go to town and see something. Us, we have to have the radio on or the TV on or we have to go online or we have to rent a movie. Sometimes I think we fill our lives and our minds with electronic noise because we fear the silence and the inner contemplation that it might bring.
And to think that I got all of that out of the Transformers movie review.

Quote: I'm desensitized to things that would have horrified and offended movie goers 50 years ago. You make a valid point. We have become desensitized to a certain degree in our society. That's why I hate horror movies so much because I know if a kid sits and watches those things enough he's going to get cold to the value of human life. That's bad enough, but I also wonder how much that kind of thing contributes to school shootings and other violent crimes.
I wonder I really do wonder what came first in a lot of cases. Did society influence the media, or did the media influence the society? I'll bet a little of both, but I'd also bet that the media, movies, tv, etc really love to try and change the way we view life.
Society is very easily influenced. I remember the patriotic moral tone of the 80's that occurred because of Ronald Reagan, as compared to the tone of the 90's when Mr. Bill took over. __________________

Along those lines I just happened into this article from Focus on the Family about the effects of movies and tv on kids and the general public. http://www.family.org/entertainment/A000000955.cfm
I found this interesting from the article.
A brief candy cameo in E.T. — The Extraterrestrial immediately sent sales of Reese’s Pieces into orbit. Sales increased 65 percent after the film’s release.
The scene in Mission: Impossible 2 of Tom Cruise’s mountaintop experience involving instructions received via his sunglasses caused Oakley sunglass sales to soar to $100 million in the quarter following the movie’s release — up 39 percent from the same quarter the previous year. Not a bad return on a $100,000 product placement investment! (Smithouser, Robert. Movie Nights, Tyndale House, 2002) __________________

Well that's how conversations go, they start with one thing and keep going into other things. We can always come back to Transformers.
Did I mention I want the 2009 Camaro Bumblebee was based on?

Tranformers made 157 millon dollars in one week. That's moving on. I bet there isn't hardly anybody left to watch it though that hasn't already seen it. I'm sure it will hit 300 million though from the folks that will watch it twice or three times. __________________
