Captain America has been absent from the Ultimate Universe since Peter Parker's death last year, but he'll be back this July in Ultimate Comics Ultimates #13.
New writer Sam Humphries had this to say to IGN Comics about bringing him back after a fairly lengthy absence. "Out there in the wilderness, he's been thinking about all the big issues, like, what am I doing acting like a superhero? What are my duties in the 21st century? Am I still a soldier? Why did I survive decades encased in ice? For what purpose? Am I living up to that purpose? At the same time, while he was absent from duty on his little vision quest, America fell apart. That's got to weigh heavily on a man who wears the stars and stripes.
"
"It’s my design based on Sam's descriptions -- WWII roots, Iraq War-style chest armor, cargo pants, boots... a very military look in Cap's way. He probably has to hand paint the 'A' on the helmet himself since he doesn't have the luxury of having S.H.I.E.L.D. painting him a perfect one."
What do you all think about Captain America's new Ultimate costume? __________________

I'm thinking this costume would be ok in a war situation with lots of artillery fire, but not a general run of the mill superhero battle. __________________

I think it sucks balls. At least it's not "real" Marvel. I haven't bothered much with Ultimates since Loeb ruined it so I say screw it, let them experiment all they like.
One thing that bugs me though...isn't Steve an artist? He'd be able to paint a straight, clean A on his helmet easily. maybe Ulty Cap isn't an artist like real Cap is?

That's a very good point. Why can't Steve being an artist paint a good looking A. __________________

Right..... He has a super fancy shield and super fancy chest chest armor, but for the "A" on the helmet he just said "screw it"? That doesn't fly.
Give me Classic Cap, Movie Cap, Avengers Cap.... I love them all, but not this.

This uniform reminds me of a really half assed version of US Agent's Cap suit from New Invaders the more I look at it. Makes sense I guess, Ulty Cap acts more like Walker than Rogers, after all.

In a weird way, I am glad it kind of sucks....actually it doesn't completely suck but it is so far from what we are used to that I don't care for it too much.
With the popularity of Cap and the other Avengers after the recent Avengers movie, I will be glad to be able to pass on a comic book that has Cap in it. I had passed on the latest Ultimates because Cap wasn't present and when I heard he was coming back, it made me ponder catching up on the title.
Also this might not be the final costume he wears after his return to the Ultimate universe....there have been several images of him after his return and none of them have this costume. This might be what he comes up with right after his return only to having an update done shortly afterwards.
Final word for me.....I will wait for a paperback if it turns out to be good.

I like it, ditch some of the gear though. Gives him more of solider feel, which is Cap.
Tights are lame guys.

Design wise, I'm not quite sure about the shoulder armor. The boxes don't seem to be doing much except get in the way and restrict movement (at least if we were to extrapolate that into the real world).
The breastplate makes sense for a non bullet proof hero, although again there is a balance that needs to be struck between "realistic" protection and "realistic" movement.
This to me is always the problem with the Batman films of late. All that armor makes little sense for a guy who is a martial artist. The same goes for cap, although I don't know if Ultimate Cap is considered as much of an athletic fighter, rather than an old school haymaker thrower.
The helmet is fine, old school, which works for the character, although I do wonder if it's self conciously old school. Sort of saying Hey look at me I'm a man out of time.

It's cool, it's military, it's appropriate. Cargo pants and army boots are always gonna be better than spandex, short shorts and bucaneer boots. I've been saying that for years on this site and guess what ... Marvel agrees! Marvel is consistently putting out new tweaks on the uniform that make it more military, same with the movie. Get over it, true believers. __________________I want a giant penny and a lifesize T-Rex statue in my high tech basement.

Cap Writer I do respect your opinion but with the costume change and Brubaker leaving it seems a good time for me to end my Cap reading after fourty eight years. When Bru's done that's gonna be my jump off point. Enjoy.
