It is. But maybe they can do more than comedy and are itching to prove it? While Marvel Studios likes to hire on the cheap, they do like to hire directors with a little something to prove who hope these movies can push them into A-list directors. Iron Man did that for Favreau. Johnston seems to have had renewed vigor for the Cap movie after that Wolfman film flopped. Whedon, while always a fan favorite, never really had a hit film.
But these out-of-leftfield choices do run the risk of becoming something like the FF movies where Tim Story from Barbershop gets hired. We just don't know until the final movie is done and we see it. As long as they have a good script to build on, don't do too many rewrites, the suits don't monkey around with it too much with interjecting too many characters to sell toys and happy meals, and the director gets the character and wants to do something special. __________________
