COMMUNITY producers Joe and Anthony Russo are in final negotiations to direct CAPTAIN AMERICA 2 for Marvel and Disney. The studio had no comment. Duo are repped by WME and 3 Arts Entertainment.

It seems the brothers impressed Kevin Feige enough to beat The Adjustment Bureau's George Nolfi for the gig. The pair have very little movie experience (Welcome To Collinwood, You Me And Dupree), being best known for their Emmy award winning work on the very popular (and very funny) tv series Community. Walt Disney Studios has slated Marvel Studios’ sequel to the Captain America: The First Avenger for a worldwide release on April 4, 2014.

What's wrong with Joe Johnston I wonder?

Johnston didn't want to do a 2nd one.

We'll see what kind of movie we get in the end. A little comedy isn't a bad thing in these superhero movies (See The Avengers). But these guys might be busting to do something besides what they have been pigeonholed for.

And I do love COMMUNITY. Now if they can just get Alison Brie into the movie to play Bernie or Diamondback I'll be sold!!

I watched it for a while, but boy is that show a real departure from Captain America.

It is. But maybe they can do more than comedy and are itching to prove it? While Marvel Studios likes to hire on the cheap, they do like to hire directors with a little something to prove who hope these movies can push them into A-list directors. Iron Man did that for Favreau. Johnston seems to have had renewed vigor for the Cap movie after that Wolfman film flopped. Whedon, while always a fan favorite, never really had a hit film.

But these out-of-leftfield choices do run the risk of becoming something like the FF movies where Tim Story from Barbershop gets hired. We just don't know until the final movie is done and we see it. As long as they have a good script to build on, don't do too many rewrites, the suits don't monkey around with it too much with interjecting too many characters to sell toys and happy meals, and the director gets the character and wants to do something special.

I'm just going to go with Marvel Studios again on this. Everyone was saying how Thor was going to be a disaster, Chris Evans was a poor choice to play Cap, and how we simply couldn't have an Avengers film without Edward Norton!
