I haven't been to this site in a long time. Good to be back. I hate to repeat what others have said, but I haven't read all the posts, I'm coming in Johnny Come Lately style. Here goes:
I have been completely bored by Ed Brubaker's work, then wham! All of the sudden they kill off Cap without warning. My first instinct, is: yeah right - he'll come back in a couple of weeks. Then I read Fallen Son Captain America and see that Tony Stark tries to give the uniform to the resurected Hawkeye, Clint something. Then I see Cap's corpse laying on a gurney - aged and skinny - as if the super serum has reversed itself. Now I'm getting nervous.
In the end I think Marvel will do the right thing and have Tony Stark declare that, despite several tryouts, there is no replacing the man behind the uniform because Steve Rogers and Captain America are one in the same. The Captain America flagship issues will continue on with same old, tired conspiracy dreck about the Winter Soldier, Red Skull and the other lackeys, *yawn*.
Then ... just as the previews for the Cap movie begin to surface, wham! Steve Rogers will be back, some way, some how. Me likes the theory of Thor bringing him back - but how about some hardcore/controversial, and modern, stuff like a SHIELD covert cloning operation? Somehow they get his DNA, with the super soldier serum preserved, and "grow" a test tube Steve Rogers for the time that he is dead. I'd prefer something like that versus that whacky stuff back in the day where the Red Skull switched his mind with Steve Rogers' mind, or he transfered his consciousness into another body.
Don't get me wrong. I'm all about the sanctity of life and am not for cloning of any sort. However, this is a comic book and given a choice, I want Steve Rogers back by any means necessary, not another b-list hero upgraded to Captain America status by virtue of a uniform switch.
As Steve Rogers was conflicted with himself in the 60's for being a man 20 years out of time, the cloned Cap could be at odds with himself simply for being a clone. Very modern, topical stuff. Maybe it's one of those things where ONLY the readers, Nick Fury & Tony Stark know he's a clone.
Whatever. Bring Steve Rogers back. Period. Don't give me the f***ing Task Master in the red, white & blue.
At the end of the day, if Steve/Cap gets a huge publicity boost out of all this and puts the character at the top of the Marvel Throne alongside Spidey and Wolvey (where he belongs), then it might have all been worth it. I want Cap back in the American conscious with movies, toys, fast food tie-ins, everything. Many folks my age don't even know who Cap is ... but they all know Spider-Man and Wolvering ... they may even know Hell Boy and Ghost Rider. Maybe Marvel is looking for a way to put Cap back on top. I hope that's what all this is about. __________________I want a giant penny and a lifesize T-Rex statue in my high tech basement.
