From Newsarama, announcement of an Ultimate Captain Aemrica series. In an interview:
Aaron: He's a bit more of as asshole, I think. But still a good guy at heart. Still a hero. And he's very much still a man out of time. That's really one of the main themes of the book. What happened while Cap was frozen in ice? What lessons did he miss out on on? And who was left to carry the load while he was gone?
It keeps Captain America interesting when creators take Cap in different direction, even in the Ultimate universe, ...maybe I'll grow to enjoy the Ultimate Cap version, since this Ultimate world hasn't taken over the Marvel U (Like the 60s DC universe replaced the 40s, then the 80s DC U replaced the 60s, only to have a cosmic collapse,...getting confusing).

YES! I love the Ultimate Cap concept. It must be a sing that I have to go back and get those hardcover collections I saw at the store today of ULTIMATES Vol.1 (for under $7) and ULTIMATES Vol. 2 (for $15)

Is it just me? But everytime I see Cap holding a firearm I cringe. Just doesn't fit.

I don't like the sound of that.

Trying to give Ultimate Cap some foibles or issues, make him more and more human or someone you know. They did that with the New Universe, ended up with not so interesting epic storylines, etc.

I don't think making him an asshole helps him become more human. You don't have to be an asshole to be human.

Nah it doesn't bother me at all, in fact I think it looks pretty cool. He looks more like a badass soldier.
I can kind of feel what you are saying though, as he hasen't really used a gun much if any in the past 30 years or so. So if you are not used to seeing him with a firearm it may seem a little weird.
For me I like it though, he looks more kick ass with a gun.

Yeah I'm not a fan of "assholes" with guns. But to each his own.

In the first 12 issues of the Ultimates, he was badass! The Pym fight, for me, was the single best Cap moment I have ever seen. I don't think he was an asshole in the first couple series, but the next series...which I think there were only 5 issues, I really hated how they wrote him. But the series when the introduced the Red Skull, I thought they brought the Ultimate Cap back to where he should be.

The Ultimates 3 was written by Jeph Loeb, so I think that's where it went wrong. In my opinion, he's a terrible writer unless he's writing Batman. I've hated everything else he's done. The Red Skull arc, Ultimates Avengers vol1, was written by Millar so it was more consistent with how Ultimate Cap was written in the first 2 volumes. The guy who created the character took him back, basically.

In the Ultimate series, Cap was not personable--like someone you can approach and talk to which the Marvel Cap was like that. But when he saw something wrong, like Hank beating Jan, Thor might be leaking info through the net or Black Panther's situation, he did something (Going after Hank, talking to Thor and covering for the Panther so he can go home).
Its something different and takes Cap to other avenues of storytelling that the Marvel Cap won't go. The trouble I feel is that the Ultimate Cap reminds me too much of the Punisher. Especially when the recent Ultimate books sort of linked Punisher to Ghost Rider to Hawkeye to that Hulk character with all that jewelries.
I do like each characters in Marvel and the Ultimate universe to have his or her's shlick or uniqueness, to set him/her apart.

I like Ultimate Cap's personality, as first shown in Millar's original Ultimates run. True, it's not quite 616 Cap - he's more hardedged. but it's not such a departure as to be off the wall. It makes sense that a guy who's gone through WWII wouldn't be quite as clean cut as 616 Cap. I particularly like that Millar write him as the ultimate tactician. He thinks super quickly and does what has to be done. The fight against Hank Pym that DarthLemmy mentions above is one of my favorite scenes as well. Cap just springs to action and overwhelms Pym as Giantman.
Millar's use of Cap in the 1st of the new Ultimate Avengers arcs (vs. the Red Skull) was the same. He's a lightning fast thinker who will always figure out how to come out on top. And this is an aspect that is dead on target w/616 Cap - but an aspect that we don't always get emphasized as much. Think back to those great classic Kirby scenes where Cap leaps into a horde of Hydra goons and in a nonstop lightning fast flurry of action takes them, all out before they realize what happens.
I also LOVE Jason Aaron's work - he's one of the best writers in comics today. (his Vertigo series "Scalped" is one of the top comics coming out today). So I'm psyched for this series.
