hello.  I am 28 years old and have never been interested in comics.  My 15 year old brother-in-law will be moving in with my wife and me next month and is a big fan of Captain America.  I'd like to have some common ground to start off with.  Is there any book or resource that would be a good way to get at least the back story and what is going now in the world of CA?

Well we have a bit of history here at http://www.captain-america.us/ including stuff on Cap's movie and tv history

Here's some general facts & stats on Cap that might be helpful http://superherouniverse.com/superheroes/marvel/captainamerica.htm

The BEST thing you could do is read up on Cap through collected editions of recent comics called "Trade Paperbacks" which are easily ordered online or found in a local comic book store (reccomended).

The best current Cap material is going to be found in "Ultimates, Volume 1".

You might try reading some non-super hero related comics as well. If you REALLY want to have an interesting conversation with this kid- try reading Scott McCloud's "Understanding Comics". They're more complex than you might think.

Other non-superhero related things easily found on Amazon.com would be:

Maus, A Life Force, the 9/11 Commission Report, Gorazade, David Boring, and From Hell.

Of course, for my money the greatest comic ever written is called "Watchmen" by Alan Moore. This one is simply amazing.

And you can order it through here http://superheromall.com/ in association with amazon. All proceeds go to me, but I have to pay for webhosting fees somehow. It's the American way.

Coming out in December, Captain America and the Falcon, NOMAD TPB, which is the follow up to Captain America and the Falcon, Secret Empire TPB.  Now those are the books to read on what made Cap GREAT!
Then there's Avengers Masterwork #1, which reprinted Avengers #4 where the Avengers defrosted Cap.
Essential Cap 1 and 2, which reprinted those cool Lee and Kirby action stories, plus Steranko's 3 part Cap versus Hydra spectacular.  Wow, those 60s and 70s Cap comics were so cool and great to read.
Essential Cap 3 is coming out soon, which had that great action pack Cap versus the Grey Gargolye and I believe the Commie hating Cap of the 50s is also included, but most of those books had Cap running around bashing heads, evident of how writers didn't know what to do with Cap, which was why those Cap books in 45 to 49 failed to hold readers interest and sales.
Back issues of the Gruenwald Cap books in the 80s and early 90s aren't that expensive, so you might find that popular Cap no more issues, I think issues 320 to 350, where Steve Rogers gave up his Cap identity so that he won't become a government stooge, and John Walker became the new Captain America.  That's worth reading.
Waid and Garney's first run on Cap, Operation Rebith TPB, is worth buying and reading.
