Here is the real cover to the Ultimates trade (not the SPX one shown twice).
I can't find the edit on this thread.

Anyone here liked any of the mini-series so far? They're appealing and likeable, but not worth going out of your way to collect and read over and over again. Like the Cap's Young Allies oneshot -- Marvel's 70th anniversary book, -- that was fun and enjoyable to read, kids joining together to promote service in the war, getting together for an adventure in 43, and those who lived to their 80s began reflecting on their past. Good book, but that Forever Allies #1 was interesting but didn't hold my appeal, (Maybe I should wait after 4 books). Likewise with that Panther and Cap mini. Okay, good action, that must be Master man 1 and Warrior woman 1, not the ones that popped up later in Invaders, but not something I recommend.

I think we are seeing a lot of these minis, not just because of the movie and the 70th anniversary of Cap, but minis in general from BOTH Marvel and DC because a regular ongoing is such a tough sell. Even the mini series is being cut down from 6 issues to 3 or 4. That way, is seems like a lower commitment by the fans.
I do mail order with my comics so I'm usually a month behind everyone else but I just read STEVE ROGERS: SUPER SOLDIER #1. What a GORGEOUS book! Eaglesham's art is fantastic in this. Brubaker wrote it and we see Cap in a role as super spy, a little like his late 60s TALES OF SUSPENSE stories with some Bond thrown in. And the first issue ends very similar to Bru's first issue of Cap from 2005. I thought this one was very good. And, quite frankly, Dale Eaglesham can draw some HOT women!!!
I haven't seen the FOREVER ALLIES first issue yet but another Cap fan I know read it and enjoyed it. I told him to seek out the 70th Anniversary one-shot. IMO, that was one of the best stand alone issues of last year and Roger Stern did a great job.
I'm also anxious to read the Patriot Cap series. It could be Blah and Meh but I've always been curious about this time of Cap and have been targeting my Golden Age Cap purchases from around this era.
The SoL HC will be a nice collection but the stories could have been better. Cap was hot then so they tried a 2nd series but it just came across as a bunch of left over stories from different eras of Cap with no real cohesion. Even Ron Garney jumped ship from the regular Cap book to be here for the grand opening first issue just to move on again a few issues later.
I'm hoping the INVADERS series is good rather than just another vanity project for Alex Ross and his friends. AVENGERS/INVADERS lost interest with me but I'm liking THE TORCH. Rather than an ongoing series that covered all these stories, selling each arc as a mini and maxi series is probably just what one has to do in today's comics market to keep it fresh.
I really hope that we get some DeMattais/Zeck trades soon. Now that is the under appreciated Cap run there that needs some love. Other than the 2 part Deathlok story, I don't think any of it as been reprinted in trade in America (and that Deathlok one was years ago). __________________

Super Soldier Spoiler alert
Brubaker said something that when he writes a 'Cap-wolf' story, that's when he's leaving the Cap book. In the recent Steve Rogers Super Soldier, he lost his super soldier body--OH NO--To me that's like 'Jumping the shark', 'In Trouble', 'Red Alert', 'OUT OF IDEAS'. Gruenwald done about a dozen stories messing with the SS formula in his long run. Some good, some bad, but it's like 'out of ideas' or moving to that 'I don't know what to do with Cap' story arcs in the past. Sounds awful, especially when Brubaker's Secret Avengers is GREAT, and full of ideas (Roger's donning the Nova helmet and adopting Nova powers--closest Cap will come to a crossover with the Green Lantern).

Cap's body reverting to its frail form was done in the 70s as well. Bru likes to mine those old story ideas so I don't knock him for that. But if he's Jumped the Shark, surely is was with REBORN. It still doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
New Marvel Solicits for November are out. I'll be posting them soon. Heavy month for Cap stuff. __________________
