Marvel is unveiling a "NEW" ongoing series in January 2011 called Captain America : The Fighting Avenger. I'm going to put the link at the end of this posting but doesn't it seem very coincidental that the movie will be Captain America The First Avenger. I felt it necessary to post this as the link will have the costume design for the book and I REALLY hope this isn't the costume for the movie (BLAHHH). Well as promised here's the link and lets get some discussion going.

That costume is horrible. I almost lost my lunch just looking at it.

The shirt might have been cool if it was used for something else... but the green pants and green helmet on top of a cowel, c'mon! That looks ridiculous. It might have looked better if it was comobined with dark blue pants, more like a cop's uniform, which would still have been tactically beneficial. But it still wouldn't be as cool as the original costume. Anyway, the series sounds promising. I've never heard of the writer though. Let's hope he is good. I don't really like the fact that he did not have any interest in Cap prior to being offered the job. Maybe he will surprise us.

As time goes on, we learn more and more about the war, life and people, so I suppose they're trying to rework Cap to fit new 'thinking'. Example: With the popularity of superheroes and cool costumes in 41, Cap just showed up with that costume. Now, the movie has to have an 'explanation' for that costume.
Problem is that if they keep changing and reworking Cap in this and that series, Marvel might alienate too many readers with a 'base idea' of who Cap is. Already there's a Jeff Mace/Patriot/Cap3 mini series coming out (Just after the Theatre of War), Steve Rogers Super Soldier mini and Bucky/Cap adventure with his WW2 Allie buddies. Captain America can and should change to adapt to the times, but too much or over-marketing might ruin him, like Ghost Rider and Punisher in the 90s (I'm waiting for the bottom to drop on Wolverine--he's practically in half of all Marvel books.).

They're so afraid of making Cap look like a dbag, they're screwing with the original. Anyone old enough to remember New Coke? Seriously.

The costume is okay, it's just too much US Agent like if you know I mean...Ultimates WWII would've been better.
You shouldn't change something so much where it gets to the point where fans hate it.

I look at all these Cap mini series and spin offs as a celebration of his 70th and of the movie. They are reissuing the Essentials and getting the trades out now in time for the movie. I think that is good business. Whether they are good comics, I'll wait and see.
We've had bad Cap comics before so the character and this reader will survive. It just comes down to voting with your wallet. Don't buy it if you don't like it. I, for one, rather have lots of Cap rather than no Cap or only one book. Maybe this one won't be good? Maybe it will? I do know something like a new Invaders book or a Jeff Mace Patriot book does appeal to this hardcore fan. People have been talking about wanting a WWII-based book too. Maybe this isn't the way they want it but I'll check it out. __________________

Im enjoying most of the Cap books right now but Vincent was 100% correct that too much may flood this out. In my opinion they`ve told Cap`s origin too many time and too many ways, and they keep doing more. I just hope that these series stay true to the character and they keep things the way they should be, not messing with the story. To me its pretty obvious that Marvel is milking the excitment for the film. I still think they`re using us fans because they know hard core collectors will subscribe to all these books. Its sad that im having to pick and choose my comics so I dont dig myself into a hole, lol. Anywho, im getting off subject. As for the costume in that pic, it could be worse. He could have red suspenders.

When a writer or artist says they had no interest in a character before taking an assignment, that usually means drastic changes. They usually try to morph the concept into something more to their own tastes. This is generally unappealing to all those who loved the original concept. Mark me as a little skeptical of this new project.

If it was replacing the original, I'd be upset. But being an "out of continuity" story....the more Cap the merrier.

I just hope all these other Cap writers don't tick off Brubaker who has over the past 5 + years breathed new life and increased sales in Captain America. Since his taking over the title it has become one of Marvels best sellers and a fan favorite. I'd love for Brubaker to remain on the book forever.

I had a feeling folks would be upset about this.
Although I figured most folks would have piciked up on the young kid cap who didn't always know exactly what to do.
This is sort of Smallville Cap. Cap learning to be a hero and running right up against the brick wall of guys like fury and who knows who else to whom this teen age Captain Marvel wannabe is more trouble then it's worth.
While I expect this to be hard for folks, I also expect it to be quite good. We always see cap as just perfection, and I think it will be good to see him as he grows into that perfection.
Like the author said, citizenship is what steve sees as the great power that requires great responsibility. So I kind of feel this story will about the cynics in the early days of wwii laughing at Cap's idealism only to have cap win out in the end.
At least that's my hope for the series.

Fighting America is not the only retro: On other sites: Series on rewriting/reworking Cap's Korvac adventure and Cap's Hydra battles. Korvac story was a gathering of almost every Avengers at that time (The 70s) to battle a God-like being called Korvac, the new mini is liken (In my opinion) to the Secret War adaptation in the Fox's Spiderman cartoons, this version would highlight Cap's view and position in that epic story. The Hydra fights are rewriting those Lee/Kirby/Steranko/Kane Cap stories in Tales of Suspense and his early books (Skipped or forgotten the proposed Cap Red Blue White mini that was suppose to be the retro of those Lee/Kirby's retelling of Cap's origin).
Sounds like material for a comedy sketch.
I'm having mixed feelings, I like the attention and effort put into creating fun and enjoyable books on Captain America, ...but worried that this is all an attempt to cash in on Captain America because if the movie sucks, the books will tank, ...or the movie becomes a success, and everyone gets sated or satisfied with Cap and stop buying his book.
Having mixed feelings? Dislike all these minis? Love all this stuff?
