Neal McDonough, who last week was indicated a near-lock by Deadline, confirmed that he will be taking the part of Dum Dum Dugan in Captain America: The First Avenger in an interview with MTV.
Also of interest are McDonough comments about the military unit, the Howling Commandos and the role they play in the film. According to McDonough, the team may undergo a name change before shooting begins.
"It may change," the actor told MTV, "I'm reading a few things that it might change. But at this point, it still is [the Howling Commandos]."
Fans may recall that early reports had Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige claiming that the Invaders would fight along Captain America in the film, but it was later revealed that Feige was actually referring to the Howling Commandos.
Reasons for a name change are unknown as are the reasons behind it (be they creative or legal). What does seem certain at this point is that the members of the Howling Commandos will be present and that Neal McDonough will be among them.

Neal McDonough Confirms 'Captain America' Role (And Bowler Hat), Talks Howling Commandos
By Josh Wigler in Marvel, News, Video
Late last week, reports surfaced that "Band of Brothers" star Neal McDonough would return to his World War II roots as Dum Dum Dugan in "The First Avenger: Captain America." We're happy to report that the casting has been confirmed by a very reliable source: none other than McDonough himself.
"I'm so excited — I'm playing Dum Dum Dugan," the actor revealed at the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday. "It's going to be a blast with Chris [Evans], Sam Jackson, Tommy Lee Jones and everyone else. It's going to be fantastic. We're going to tear it up!"
McDonough is already growing Dugan's trademark mustache and plans to wear the character's signature bowler hat. He also said that the Howling Commandos are a part of "Captain America," though the squad's name could change between now and shooting.
"I'm not sure at this point. It may change — I'm reading a few things that it might change," McDonough said of the Howling Commandos' name. "But at this point, it still is. All I know is that I'm going to kick some butt and it's going to be a blast."
Indeed, McDonough is going to kick plenty of butt, as the actor gleefully revealed: "Oh, I'm going to see a lot of action. [I'm] the go-to guy, so I'm very happy with that."
Beyond going back to the battlefields of World War II, McDonough's excitement stems from the fact that he'll be working alongside Chris Evans, an actor he described as "one of the coolest, funnest cats and a fellow Boston boy — I'm sure we're going to get into a lot of trouble when we're [shooting in England]!"
"He's so dedicated to his craft and he works so hard not just on the physical being but he works hard as an actor," McDonough continued in his assessment of Evans. "If you haven't seen him in 'The Losers,' he just kills it in it."
McDonough is also excited to join the Marvel "family," as he's already a fan of their work with the "Iron Man" movies. "When the first 'Iron Man' came out, it blew everyone's minds and the second one was just incredible," he said. "The people at Marvel are so smart. They know exactly what they have. Jon Favreau, what he's done — the people they bring in. It's terrific. I'm blessed to be part of the family now."
While McDonough has signed to play Dugan in multiple Marvel movies, he's only looking at "Captain America" at the moment. "You sign up for future movies ahead of time, but you just keep praying," he said. "I'm so fortunate to be part of something like this. If there are more to come, great. If not, I've got a great job and I've got the greatest wife at home — that's what makes me happy."

Sounds like he is pretty stoked about the role. I am happy to hear it. Jeremy Renner is in talks to play Hawkeye in the Avengers, but his interviews sound less enthusiastic. __________________"--When the mob and the Press and the whole WORLD tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth and tell the whole world 'No you move'."

Also, Stanley Tucci as Doc Erskine. Nice. I'm SO glad it's the Howlers in this movie and NOT the Invaders! __________________I want a giant penny and a lifesize T-Rex statue in my high tech basement.

Agreed. The Invaders would have taken away from the super human value of Captain America. Plus the Howling Commandos are much more viable to transfer to the silver screen.
Now what about WW2 Nick Fury? Will he be a classic fury type and perhaps all directors of S.H.I.E.L.D are named Nick Fury as a code name perhaps? Non continuity, but a neat idea to get in the original cigar smoking Nick played by none other than Kurt Russell ... I can dream right? __________________"--When the mob and the Press and the whole WORLD tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth and tell the whole world 'No you move'."

I don't know. Maybe its just me but I think they might be adding too many characters to this movie. I would have liked to see more Cap and less "other" characters. I mean is Bucky going to be throughout the movie? How about The Howling Commando's? I know all of this is speculation but I would rather have most of the movie be about Cap.

I wouldn't worry about there not being enough Cap. I think people like Dugan,Fury, and the rest of the Commandos aren't going to have that big of roles in the movie. They will probably be mostly in the background while Cap and Bucky do all the butt-kicking. They'll be fighting too, but Captain America will get the best of the action.

I hope Baron Zemo is in the film. Probably a long shot.

Dunno, he would be a nice addition, but it will probably be some missle that the Red Skull chutes off right before the end of the movie as a last defiant act. __________________"--When the mob and the Press and the whole WORLD tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth and tell the whole world 'No you move'."

Baron Zemo, Batroc and Master Man all suck donkey.
All you need is the Red Skull and a buttload of shield fodder Nazis in uniform. I'm already concerned about the inclusion of Arnim Zola.
I'm really curious about Nick Fury and if it will be Sam Jackson as we know him today, and we see him take the infinity serum that keeps him "young" until present day 2011/2012. That will be a stretch for general audiences! I welcome it, and the inclusion of the Howlers in a small, almost cameo role. __________________I want a giant penny and a lifesize T-Rex statue in my high tech basement.

Im okay with all these characters being in the films, so long as its done like the comics in the sense that, yeah, the commandos are fighting with Cap but Cap takes off running into the fray while the others hang back fighting in true soldier, sensible, fashion. As for Zola, im very happy with that as hes an awesome villian. Red Skull is definitely more important, but Skull uses people, its part of his seedy nature, so it`ll be cool to watch him force other people to do his dirty work.

The Red Skull is probably the most evil villain in the Marvel Universe. Him and Dr.Doom.
