Stanley Tucci Confirmed as Dr. Abraham Erskine in Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Marvel Studios announced today that Oscar® nominated actor Stanley Tucci has been cast to star as Dr. Abraham Erskine in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Dr. Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios most recently released the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including, THOR on May 6, 2011, and MARVEL STUDIOS’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

That's a great addition.

I was worried about Evans, but they're really filling out the rest of the cast quite nicely.

Indeed. I'm really hoping the director gets up for this one because the cast is looking good.

All I can figure is that Marvel must've seen something in Chris Evans in order to choose him as the role of Cap.

Dude, watch Sunshine. He is a great actor so don't let his Date Movie and other silly comedies get in the way. London is another that has him playing a more serious role.

Dudes, that kick-ass uniform is going to help sell him as Cap SO much. Don't worry too much. Evans was very good in "Street Kings" opposite the bad-cop Keanu Reaves. Evans played the white knight good-cop and sold it well. He was gritty and serious, not all lame like he usually is in romantic comedies. I didn't care for him too much in "The Losers," but I think it was the character and the glasses he wore.

The rest of the cast and the action set pieces will help him along. I just hope that in the character driven scenes and close ups, that we can feel his angst - both as a 90-LB weakling inside an adonis body and as the spirit of Steve Rogers inside of a symbolic uniform that puts the weight of an entire nation on his shoulders.

'Nuff said.

I heard this podcast, a couple of guys discussing news on the Captain America movie.  I like what they said about Stanley Tucci in the Captain America movie, saying that Tucci is very highly critical about his and other people's work, and being in a Cap movie lends support to the strength of the script.
Good news to me since I've been hearing that they might go the 'Ultimate Cap' route--which I continue to say and rant that 'an abrasive and mean Captain America is not marketable' (Angry American not the way to go), but the poor kid living in Brooklyn, having nothing but his belief and love for his country is the way to go.

Captain America's story is such an awesome story that all of us know, but i will be glad when EVERYONE knows. The same thing happened to Iron Man, outside of people who read the comics, not many people were aware. Now that we have two successful Iron Man films people are aware. I can't wait til this happens with Captain America. I can't wait to see little kids dressing up like cap for halloween!

Don't get your hopes too high, there's a 50-50 chance it's gonna do good or suck major.

Yeah, I had high hopes back in the 90s upon hearing news of the Captain America movie coming out.
The other day, while driving home from work, I recalled that Stanley Tucci did a silly dance sequence with Richard Gere in some movie about a middle age workaholic (Gere) learning to dance to reconnect with his wife.  That scene was panned by critics, ...

Fingers crossed for a good or half-decent movie that won't make me cringe or embarrassed to be a Capfan.

Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci is playing Dr. Erskine in Marvel's much anticipated Captain America: The First Avenger movie. And while filming has been underway for several weeks, Tucci now speaks with Screen Crave on his role in the film and cast members hes worked thus far.

“I play Dr. Erskine who’s described as an elderly German scientist. I have to do an accent and be elderly. When they asked me to play him initially I was like ‘Is that like a compliment or is that an insult? I don’t know?’”

If you don't know, in the comic, Dr. Abraham Erskine injects Steve Rogers with the “Super-Soldier” serum that makes him a the epitome of human perfection. Tucci continues...

"I shot with Chris Evans, and Dominic Cooper, and Tommy Lee Jones and Hayley Atwell. I love the role. It’s really well written. I’d never done anything like that before. I’ve always wanted to do a German accent. It’s so much fun. It’s really interesting. Very good script, great experience. I was shooting it in London and I go back in a month and a half."

In Joe Johnson's direction, Starring alongside Tucci, Chris Evans (Captain America) Hugo Weaving (Red Skull), Tommy Lee Jones (Gen. Chester Philips), Sebastian Stan (Bucky), Hayley Atwell (Peggy Carter), Toby Jones (Arnim Zola), Dominic Cooper (Howard Stark), Neal McDonough (Dum Dum Dugan), and Samuel L. Jackson (Nick Fury).

That is the oddest interview I have ever heard....seemed that the interviewer was just reading from a paper....very bland.
