Here is a more complete telling of the story of Captain America in the future as first posted @ Superherouniverse:
Star Date 2265.112.11:
Mr. Sulu, establish inner-atmospheric orbit. Maintain 1800 meter minimum elevation.
Ay-ay sir.
Mr. Spock, what to you have?
This is Scotty sir; we are ready for back-up in the transporter room. Mr. Spock has all coordinated fixed.
Very good all. Stand by. Let’s get this object recovered quickly but safely. I want the Enterprise in space-dock within 2 hours.
Spock here Captain. I rechecked my reading three times before contacting you. It would appear that the anomaly in the ice is alive.
Alive!? Are you sure Spock?
98% sure Captain, but we won’t know conclusively until we have it onboard.
Very well, that changes things a bit. Bones, did you hear that?
Yes, Jim, Spock sent me his reading right before he contacted you. What’s the plan?
No major changes Bones. We’ll still extract by tractor beam or transport, I’ll leave that final decision to Spock. Cargo bay is still final destination for the object, at least until we can clear it of any possible contaminates or security issues. Since Spock thinks it’s alive though, I need medical sled on-site for emergency transport to sick-bay if Spock is right.
Got it Jim, I’ll have a team down there in 5 minutes.
Mr. Spock, it’s your and Scotty’s call now. Proceed at you discretion and get it up to the Enterprise.
Understood Captain, Scotty and Spock reply in unison.
Soon the action resumes in the cargo bay.
The crew of the Enterprise is shocked by what they bring from the surface. After a cursory examination the figure is rushed to sickbay.
Later.
What’s the word Bones?
Considering less than 3 hours ago he was a human-popsicle, not bad.
Kirk smirks.
Specifics Bones?
It’s actually pretty incredible Jim. Estimating he’s been in nothing but common ice for at least 200 years, the physical effects seem limited. His physique is incredible, and certainly played a huge role in his hibernation. Aside from some very minor frost-bite, he’s healthy as a horse, Clydesdale at that. He appears to have naturally held up as well as a top of the line 22nd century cryo-chamber could offer.
“Fascinating Doctor”, as Spock might say.
The thawing process was a breeze. I do still have him in a low-grade coma as I have concerns about some soft-tissue like the brain. It’d be a shame if his incredible body holds up to this big freeze and his brain doesn’t.
Agreed. When will you know?
The testing is underway right now. You should also know he’s talking.
Talking!?
Mostly indecipherable mumbles, but one word keeps popping up; “Bucky”
Bucky? Any idea what it means.
Not sure Jim, perhaps it’s his name?
Possibly Bones.
Then there’s his outfits. I’ve sent them to another lab for further testing. Clearly one appeared to be 20th century military fatigues for sure, but the costume underneath…..could it really be….
“Captain America”? That was my first guess also. Doesn’t seem possible. All Terrans know of Captain America. He had his roots in World War II, but lived well into the mid-21st century. He started as a hero of the United States but ended as a hero of the globe. He was the last of the “superheroes” as I recall.
Then why is this relic of the 20-21st century wearing the classic Captain America outfit?
There’s the rub Bones. I’ve instructed Spock to pull all Star Fleet files on Captain America.
As if on queue, Commander Spock enters sick bay.
Captain, I have the information requested. Fascinating information, which may answer some questions while open further concerns.
What do you have Spock?
Captain, per common Earth history knowledge, the age of costumed super-men lasted approximately a century; from 1938-2044 to be exact. The last public costumed vigilante was actually a mutant. The mutant hero Praxis remained active until 2062; most experts though mark the beginning of the end of the super-power age with the death of Captain America in 2035. With the mutant gene apparently eradicated by then, the eugenics programs that lead to individuals like Khan Noonien Singh came into existence.
Yes Spock. That corresponds to my general thoughts. Continue….
Specifically, Captain America first appeared in 1940, just prior to the United States entry into Word War II. He partnered with a young ward named Bucky…
Bucky!? That’s the word out visitor has uttered. Why would he speak this apparent name? Is he calling out to Bucky, or is he Bucky? Tell me more Spock as I’ve honestly never heard of “Bucky”
That’s quite expected Captain. Bucky’s record is limited to merely five years of activity, while Captain America’s duration was decades longer. Bucky disappeared near the end of World War II as the result of a nefarious scheme by Baron Zemo. Captain America survived an explosion while Bucky was lost at sea. Captain America continued in his role for decades, 2035 to be specific. While there is a public gap for Captain America for 17 months spanning parts of 1945-1947; no further public mention of Bucky occurs after 1945.
So Spock, if Captain America died in 2035, who is this individual and why is saying “Bucky”?
Captain, in 2041, the United Sates government released a report on the history of it’s now deceased Super-Soldier Operative Captain America. It was the revealed that the original Captain America was named Steve Rogers and he was actually the one whom died near the end of World War II at the hands of the villain Baron Zemo, not “Bucky”. James Buchanan Barnes, “Bucky”, was the survivor of the Baron Zemo encounter.
Bucky? So you are inferring that the man in sick bay actually the original Captain America or is trying to tell us his name is Bucky?
Let me continue. As I mentioned, Bucky survived the blast that killed Captain America. With Captain America lost, the United States deemed it prudent to continue the patriotic role. James Barnes assumed the mantle of Captain America in 1946 after receiving an augmentation treatment. James Barnes, Captain America, died in 2035 of advanced age.
OK Spock, if Barnes was Captain America from about 1946 till 2035, is the man we recovered Steve Rogers?
That would be the obvious answer. Still…
Spock, would you consider a mind-meld?
Doctor?
He seems stable enough Jim. I’d just ask that you go easy on him Spock.
Certainly doctor.
With this, Commander Spock places his hands on the cool skin of the figure on the examination table. Spock repositions his fingers several times, taking a full minute before he stops. His brows wrinkles and breathe fluctuates. Sweat forms on his fore-head. Eye-lids ripple as his eyes roll beneath. As the first bead of sweat drops from his nose, Spock pulls his hands from the figures face.
This is Steve Rogers, Spock announces.
A gasp covers the room….
Star Date 2265.330.18:
After his initial rejuvenation on-board the Enterprise, Captain America is sent to Star Fleet Command in San Francisco. There he continues the healing process. His physical structure head up well to the centuries of ice-cover, but his motor skills lag behind. Intensive therapy combined with unnatural endurance allow for a speedy recovery. Just shy of one month since his return, Steve Rogers is back in the fighting shape that nearly got him through World War II. The real healing required is his since of loss. Everyone he ever knew is now long dead. Rogers draws upon this pain and hardens himself for this new reality. He gains a hard edged that was not seen even on the grimmest days on the German front. He totally immerses himself in physical and combat training. He even manages to show long-lost combat and martial arts techniques to his instructors. By the end of his second 30 days of recovery and training, he has mastered Star Fleet’s top tier combat level, normally an act that takes 2 years of intensive work. Sensing the human weapon they now posses, Star Fleet offers Steve Rogers an honorary commission as a Federation officer in the covert ops division as a Captain. Rogers eagerly accepts the offer and looks forward to exploring this strange new world. After more trading and briefing, Captain Rogers is prepared for his first intergalactic mission as part of the Federation.
Upon hearing that the Enterprise has returned to Earth for an emergency nacelle repair, Rogers deems it appropriate to thank the crew that revived him. Rogers is beamed directly to the bridge of the Enterprise, taking Lt. Uhura by surprise.
Captain America, a pleasure to finally meet you in a, shall we say, conscious state?
The pleasure is all mine Captain Kirk. I’ve heard much about you, your crew, and the Enterprise over the course of the last few months. I consider this a great honor.
As do I Captain America. Not often one gets to meet a legend.
I feel I may be saying the exact same thing to fiends in the years to come as I recall this day. And more thing Captain Kirk, I’m just Steve Rogers now.
Very well, Captain Rogers, welcome aboard and let’s take a tour of this hip, Kirk says as he extends his hand.
After making needed repairs and upgrades, the Enterprise continues on her 5 year tour.
Star Date 2266.26.12 :
Wiki: “… The Starship Enterprise investigates temporal disturbances centered on a nearby planet. Sulu is caught in a console explosion during the investigation and suffers a heart flutter. Doctor McCoy is summoned to his aid and decides on a cordrazine shot to awaken him. Moments later, a further temporal disturbance causes the ship to shake violently; as a result McCoy accidentally injects himself with an overdose of serum, causing him to become violently paranoid. Delusional, he flees from the bridge and beams down to the planet.
Captain Kirk forms a landing search party made up of two security guards, himself, Spock, Scotty, and Uhura. Once on the planet, Spock finds that the source of the time distortions is an ancient ring of glowing, stone-like material. The ring speaks and, identifying itself as the Guardian of Forever, explains that it is a doorway to any time and place, and displays periods of Earth's history in its portal opening.”
Several well know periods of Earth and American history in particular are revealed, all generally known common knowledge events. Suddenly a totally foreign image flashes by:
Spock, did you see that?
Indeed Captain, most perplexing.
That was Captain America; Steve Rogers Captain America, correct?
It would visually appear so Captain.
Spock, how is that possible? We just revived Steve Rogers several months ago. We both shook that man’s hand.
Once again Captain, most perplexing. I saw exactly what you did; it appeared that the Steve Rogers “Captain America” was being handled by a giant’s hand while still encased in a block of ice, similar to the predicament we found him Star Date 2265.112.
How is that possible? Is this just a similar looking individual costumed like Captain America?
Perhaps Captain…..
Spock, I see the wheels turning behind those Vulcan eyes. What are you thinking?
Spock’s spine stiffens and he adjust his shirt and readies his answer.
Let me preface my comments on the basis that I believe the Guardian shows only factual events from Earth history. I calculate the chance of false imagery is less than .003%. If this is then taken at 100% factual, then I have no choice to state with clarity that we currently reside in an altered reality.
What!? Altered reality, I don’t follow Spock. This is our reality, how can it be altered, and if it was, how would we even know? Granted I have a human brain, but Spock, this has to be a stretch even for a Vulcan intellect.
Indeed Captain, I will admit this is an extraordinary proclamation. None-the-less, the evidence points that way. The Guardian showed Steve Rogers being revived, based on chronology, approximately the Earth year 1960.
Spock, we know Captain America was not revived until a few months ago. Why this anomaly back to 1960.
That is the question Captain; while I’m not suggesting that all reality had changed since 1960, I do forward the premise that everything that has occurred since Star Date 2265 is false.
False, like a dream?
Not exactly, by “false” I mean false to the overall time-continuum.
So you hypothesize that something like a time-anomaly occurred in approximately 1960, and we are now just seeing it’s effects.
Actually Captain, I believe the effects have taken place since then, it’s just that the major deviations to us are a more recent alteration.
Incredible Spock, to think history as we think we know it might not be so.
That is where the facts lead us.
If so Spock, how would we know for sure and how do we correct it?
Spock pauses as his mind calculates a response.
Just as he begins to speak Dr. McCoy streaks past him and jumps into the time-portal. Kirk and Spock look at each other in bewilderment, knowing they must drop this line of pondering and follow the delusional Dr. McCoy. Without hesitation the two jump into the gateway after their friend…
It doesn’t end there.....
Epilogue: Unknown to the crew of the Enterprise, the image provided by the Guardian of Tomorrow was actually the real thing. In this time-distorted future reality, Kang the Conquer was successful in masking Captain America’s frozen body from the Sub-Mariner in 1964. As such, Steve Rogers stayed entombed in ice until the 23rd Century when finally discovered by Kirk and company. Meanwhile, in the year 2010, A.T.T.A. identifies this time-manipulation and sends Time-Rider to investigate.
