The
Ultimate Avengers straight to DVD release is essentially a
Captain America animated movie with guest stars like Thor, the
Wasp, Giant Man, Iron Man, and the Incredible Hulk. Of course
the Ultimate Nick Fury probably gets as much screen time as
Cap. The DVD even looked like Captain America's shield.
The
movie begins with Captain America in the last fight of World
War 2, trying to prevent a nuclear missile from being fired at
America. In this tale, the Nazis have gotten some
technological help from extraterrestrial beings.
Cap's
costume for the war scenes are more like a combination
soldier's uniform and superhero costume. It looked good, but I
didn't really like it. |
I'm
sorry I just think Cap should look like a superhero even in battle.
I hate major costume changes. I know in reality nobody would wear
your average superhero costume into battle, but I haven't seen
anyone else wearing one to fight off bank robbers either. It's
fantasy so I say let Cap look like Cap.
Just
like the original story Cap is frozen until he is found by Nick
Fury. The man out of time segment is very good, and you get a
feeling for what Steve Rogers the man must be going through.
The
modern costume is closer to the traditional Captain America costume,
but this Ultimate Cap has no wings. How can he be called wing head
without his wings? Sorry, but after years and years of reading
comics with Cap's wings intact it just didn't seem decent. It was
like Cap was running around naked or something.
The
only other thing I thought was a little out of character was when
Cap and the rest of the Avengers went off to sulk after they had
problems in their first battle. That just doesn't sound like Cap.
He's a soldier! Soldiers don't get to call time out and walk around
feeling sorry for themselves especially when an alien army is about
to attack Earth.
But,
all in all I give the movie thumbs way up! The final battle between
the Avengers and the Incredible Hulk was just plain awesome! I'm
also a big Hulk fan, and I felt like this movie did more justice to
the Hulk than the big screen version. When the chips were down and
everyone else was down, Cap stands up to the monster that could
literally tear his head off and throw it for miles. He stands toe to
toe with the monster in one scene dodging punches that could easily
kill him. This is what Captain America is about. The fighting
American spirit that just will not let go or cave in -- especially
when there are those in harms way.
There
are some cool extras as well. George Perez discusses both of his
stints on the Avengers. I hadn't realized until seeing this
interview that he had gotten his start on the Avengers in the
1970's.
So,
true believers get your copy today! I don't think you'll be
disappointed!
