Fury says he’s overlooking a man also known for cheating father time – and death – several times over. Just then, Cap hears a rough voice that says “Hey bub, don’t tell me you’ve forgotten how purdy my mug is.” Cap turns around and stares at the savage mutant he knew as Wolverine, a man many knew as Weapon X and others knew as Logan. “You’re James Howlett?,” Cap asks. “That’s my name, don’t wear it out golden boy,” Howlett responds. Cap immediately tells Fury he’d rather lead with a more predictable and steady partner. Howlett growls with laughter, and teases Cap about his feelings being hurt. “Face it, bub. We’re in this to kick some Gray ass together. Besides, I’ve mellowed out a bit.” With an evil grin, Howlett winks at Cap and lights a cigar that lights his face, revealing some wrinkles and white hair reminiscent of his look in the Wolverine: The End series. IV. Temple of Doom Cap barges into a S.H.I.E.L.D. war room full of U.N. Dignitaries as well as the current President and his cabinet. He asks “Anyone have a problem with the old flags or the shield?!” Everyone in the room stares at Cap with their mouths gaping open – no one says a word. He is a sight to behold, looking like a cross between Captain America as depicted in The Ultimates and the Master Chief character from the Halo videogame series. He dons a baggy, navy blue combat suit with a visor helmet and utility belt. To make the uniform his own, he sports a navy blue, blast-proof vest with vertical red and white strips around his midsection and a white star over his heart. The old Betsy Ross flag is stitched onto each of his broad shoulders. His trusty shield is strapped to his back; the only change to the vibranium disc is a blast-proof forcefield that Cap can activate or deactivate at will. After plans are approved, Cap and Howlett assemble their team and head for Mexico. On the flight to the abduction site, Howlett continues to tease Cap, muttering about how “apple pie” had to have his flags or else he’d take his ball and go home. Cap deflects it all as easily as a bebe pellet off of his shield. The S.H.I.E.L.D. Sky Destroyer touches down on the site of the ruins with the aid of an invisibility cloak. The whole strike force exists onto terra firma and opens an entrance to an underground bunker near the ancient Indian ruins. The bunker has been transformed into a completely modern tactical operations center complete with the latest 22nd century technology. After settling in and observing the skies overhead for a couple of days, the team notices several triangular UFOs hovering in the skies above. After moving around in irregular and unearthly flight patterns, the UFOs touch down on the far side of the temple ruins. Through sophisticated surveillance tools, the S.H.I.E.L.D. strike team can see that the EBEs also seem to be heading underground. A S.H.I.E.L.D. operative mutters about how the “damn EBEs” have been around since the days of the ancient civilizations and how they’ve set up bases near all of their favorite abduction points. Howlett simply smiles “I’m ready for a good scrap.” The strike team decides to observe the EBEs for any entrance/exit patterns in and out of their base under the Temple. With a confrontation looming after daybreak, Cap feels conflicted about taking lives. He’d always kept to a non-lethal code of conduct whenever possible, but killing an EBE in cold blood without an option to communicate first is new territory for Cap to consider. Believing in God, he’s confused about extending his respect for life to include the EBEs, much like he would for a dog or a cat. He decides to write about it in his e-journal and writes a letter to Valentine about his experiences so far. Howlett barges in on him and barks “you know you can send love letters via hologram these days, don’t you Romeo?” Cap flings his shield at the hairy mutant in the blink of an eye and tells Howlett to be ready for combat in the morning. Howlett pops his claws and barely manages to deflect a blow that might’ve taken his head off. “Touchy, touchy,” Howlett jabs. The strike team waits for bright skies due to the EBE sensitivity to sun light and storms the EBE base through a series of tunnels under the ancient ruins. The team easily mows down many unarmed EBEs with blaster fire, but some of the S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives are overwhelmed by swarming EBEs that wrestle the agents to the ground and take off their helmets. Without the helmets, the EBEs are able to transmit a death frequency into the brains of the unprotected operatives. Cap notices what is going on and yells at Howlett to put on a helmet and for everyone else to keep theirs on at all cost. Several EBEs try to escape, but most are captured by a second wave of S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives. The handful of EBEs that do manage to squirt away are extracted out of nowhere by the triangular UFO ships. Inside, the two waves converge to take account of EBE and S.H.I.E.L.D. casualties along with living, captured EBEs. During the search, Howlett discovers a door leading to a hidden lab full of both human and hybrid hostages, incubators and jars containing human and hybrid fetuses. Page 1 2 3 4 5 |
